Does the kit come with instructions?, like If I take it to Nissan can they just follow the instructions to install it perfectly with no gaps, and not F* up the install? Lol. So in other words: is it so easy that a Nissan caveman can do it? ;)
Unfortunately it does not come with instructions. It is a LONG overdue project on my part to create one for this product.
Install the shifter is fairly straight forward. There is no modification required to the car or the shifter. Basically, pull the old one out. But the AMS Short Throw Shifter back in and adjust to your desired setting. |
I just ordered the AMS short shifter kit and I was wondering if there was an easier way of installing it? Do I really need to take the whole shifter assembly out to do the install?
Yes. The shifter trim panel and shift knob will need to be removed. From there the two rubber shift boots and retaining plate will need to be removed as well.
At that point you will need to disconnect the bolt securing the shifter to the shift arm. Some people can get their hands around it to do the install. But I cannot. I recommend jacking the car up and having it on a lift. When you get to this point. The shifter should literally "Pop" out since there is a sping beneath the shifter that aids in the reverse gear selection. Reassembly is the opposite of disassembly. |
I'm just gonna have Nissan do it, I really wish it came with instructions, but since it is a direct replacement, they should kinda already have OEM instructions.
Oh and which AMS is this then, do they have a website?
Do u cut the little zip tie that is tied to the bottom ring?
The AMS that produces this shifter is Absolute Motor Specialties from Canada. Not the AMS renowned for the Time Attack EVO's and GT-Rs. They are two separate companies.
As for the question about the zip at the bottom, yes. That Zip tie is only on there for the purpose of shipping. The plastic washers and metal inner sleeve would simply fall out and float around in the packaging during shipping. Simply cut it off at the time of installation. |
I just had this installed as well, it does vibrate alil bit, but I've noticed lately sometimes if I "gun it" in second I will hear an almost rattle type noise and when I went to the gas station the other day it was rattling my shift knob alil. I noticed the rubber boot kept coming up and I had to push it back down. It kinda feels like the stock shifter actually, or maybe I've gotten used to it. Also how do you raise/lower the ams shifter kit?
yea i feel like mines not smooth when moving it side to side in neutral it even gets stuck on the right sometimes =/ i figure it just needs to be broken in a little though just got it installed 2 days ago so time will tell
Ya side to side is not as smooth as stock, and it kinda likes to get stuck while taking it outta reverse.

Snapping & Jon I will be sending you a replacement piece for your AMS Shifters. We to have started experiencing a slight rattle on with the shifter. The culprit is the two metal washers on top. We have a remedy. I will drop them in the mail for you guys on Tuesday. The install of this piece just requires removal of the shift knob, nothing major.

cool, thanks dustin for continued great customer service. What is the piece?, and how do I install it?
Also can you PM just to confirm the address?
The replacement piece is a plastic spacer made from Polycarbonate. It will not rattle like the metal washers do and raises the shift boot spacer the correct amount to meet the shift knob.
Jon, PM sent. Dustin |
just ordered my short shifter from you guys(and my rear fog light :) ) i'm very excited and cant wait! i'll try to remember to post my feedback on this!
Edit: switched to TWM SS
hmm? how come you switched?
Jon experienced an unusual failure with his AMS Short Shifter. This is not very common [something I had not seen] and was covered 100% under AMS's warranty.
John sent his shifter back into us, which we refunded and forwarded onto AMS. John, what are you thoughts on the TWM piece? It seems that you have to disassemble your factory shifter to properly install that piece. |
I had my AMS short shifter installed at Z1 a few months ago and it works great. I've had no problems with it. I only wish that AMS made it a little shorter. The adjustabilty is a great feature though. Can always adjust it to your preference and comfort.
Thanks to Dustin and Z1! |
are these in stock?
