That's the stuff.

Nitex 09-21-2010 02:33 PM

Ok got Z1 on the line here, they are checking into sending me out some of the new mt-85. I would rather not mix it myself.

Any noticeable difference spear?

Much smoother cold shifting. Feels the same once everything is up to operating temp.

kenchan 09-21-2010 03:43 PM

spearfish- any difference in the pumps you use?

are these okay?... or any other recommendations? :)

The only difference is how much of a mess you'll make in the process. I used a POS pump from Autozone and the hoses leaked where they simply press-fit into the pump housing. The gear oil is nasty $hit, so wear gloves.

My next swap, I'll be using this:
fluid transfer pump

kenchan 09-21-2010 04:13 PM

^^ thanks, spearfish! im definitely getting that instead. i have motive brake bleeders/replenish bottles and was looking for their pump but couldn't find it. now i know. :D

spearfish25 09-22-2010 09:01 AM

Sure thing. Looking at the motive pump again, I'm tempted to just make my own adapter and use my brake bleeder Motive pump to do the diff oil. Since it already includes a fitting to change the different caps you use, it should be easy to make a tube that screws on and has a 90deg hollow metal end to go in the diff.

ChrisSlicks 09-22-2010 10:01 AM

I installed straight MT-90 in the transmission but can't say I would recommend that overall. The transmission felt great on the track but is notchy on the street especially when cold, the oil is too viscous when below 200F. The new MT-85 looks to be a better recipe for our transmission.

Nitex 09-22-2010 10:13 AM

I am currently shipping back the 90 to Z1, and in a few weeks when it arrives :shakes head: they will ship out the 85.

If you don't mind the wait, that's fine. If you want it done sooner, just mix them. Very simple to do.

Mandingo 03-21-2011 09:10 PM

Just changed my oil to MT-85 at ~3k miles. Glitter came out :ugh2::

Tell me this is ok lol

It's not gold, it's brass, I'm guessing from the syncro's. A small amount during break in is ok but if it continues you have a problem. How many miles?

spearfish25 03-22-2011 07:16 AM

Ruh roh. Just drive until there is a problem shifting. The dealer won't do anything about tiny shavings in your fluid. You have a 5 year powertrain warranty. Just don't install a short shifter, aftermarket clutch or flywheel.

Mandingo 03-22-2011 06:33 PM

Yea, I wont be doing any mods that could void the powertrain warranty now which is a pity. I was thinking about clutch and flywheel options until I saw this mess in the oil.

@ChrisSlicks
it has 3000 miles

More on topic--I'm glad I changed to redline but shifts feel exactly the same as before. I'm sure when it gets cold again there will be some difference

ChrisSlicks 03-22-2011 07:20 PM

Hopefully just some normal break-in wear, the first 1000 miles or so on the transmission will create some. Do another change in 6-months and see what you get. Most important just bring it to the dealer if you detect anything out of the ordinary.

Not to worry- that's not too much glitter. The other thing to watch for is any large chunks of brass or steel in the shavings. It's normal for there to be some syncro wear, but anything that looks like a small mass should be examined more closely. Whenever I change the tranny oil in my road race T2 Z, I look very carefully at the "glitter" to make sure no major damage is showing up.

stunner253 04-02-2011 06:41 PM

Thanks for the DIY spearfish! my transmission oil change went smoothly :)

fjpthree 06-16-2011 06:47 PM

At what mileage did you complete this change?

spearfish25 09-01-2011 04:05 PM

I did it at 5k and every spring thereafter. Manual recommends doing at 30k intervals, but the oil looks so crappy I do it more often.

TongMan 09-01-2011 05:37 PM

OP please update first post with pics for easier viewing.

cossie1600 10-08-2011 02:04 PM

Thanks for the write up. I did this at 13931 miles. Just a couple of note I want to add.

#1 My transmission hadt always been notchy since it was new, I was too cheap and lazy to do this job. When it was completed yesterday, the transmission felt so much smoother. I still get the occasional notch in second, but it was nowhere close to what it was. All the other gears felt smoother. If I were to do over, I would probably change it after a few months.

#2 My car has about 12 track days, 450 autox runs and some easy street miles, the fluid were completely black after 13931 miles.

#3 I used Amsoil 75W90 GL-4. Please make sure you use GL-4 as the brass in the transmission doesn't like GL-5 fluids. My car had 3 quart coming in, 3.5 went back in.

#4 I bought my fluid pump from Harbor Freight, it was like $6.99. The pump is excellent as it is fast and doesn't leak.

#5 The drainplug and fill plug are 9mm hex if i recall correctly, maybe 8mm, but i am pretty sure it is 9mm

Differential fluid tonight

Glad it worked out for you. If you think the tranny fluid looked bad, just wait til you see the diff fluid.

cossie1600 10-08-2011 09:57 PM

about to go down and check it, need my wife to get into the garage and spot the car onto the ramps

cossie1600 10-08-2011 10:55 PM

you are right, the diff is disgusting, I am uppering the change interval to every other oil change. It's actually quite a bit easier than the tranny

EVOnomore 10-21-2011 07:03 AM

Any picks of Tranny fill plug?

Dallaz 11-07-2011 02:22 PM

Great write up. I definitely need to do this, my shifts into first and second are always rough compared to our 3000gt and camaro in the lower gears. +1 rep for OP

No, the auto is completely different and requires different fluid and procedures.

anthonyy 02-17-2012 09:38 PM

repped spearfish. thanks!:tiphat:

Eon777 04-01-2012 10:38 AM

Hello, stupid question I guess but here it is. I put 3 quarts in but it didn't overflow. Is that enough oil for the M/T?

I have been driving it, seems fine, but I have to ask.. Thanks..

djpathfinder 04-01-2012 01:21 PM

Basically, just keep pumping until it starts to overflow, then you're good.

Was your Z raised on a level surface when you were draining and filling the tranny? I've filled and drained several Z trannys and they never take more than three quarts.

ZMan8 04-02-2012 10:03 AM

I was also wondering if it's worth buying the 4th quart just in case, or have people been fine with buying 3?

anthonyy 04-02-2012 11:30 AM

I bought 4 just in case and ended up using only a little bit of the 4th.

That's what i was thinking, buy a fourth for just in case

Eon777 04-04-2012 11:51 AM

Yes the car was level. I guess to be on the safe side I bought another bottle, now I won't be thinking about it..

Thanks!!:tiphat:

Eon777 04-06-2012 10:07 PM

4 bottles is what i would buy. I put in 200ml of the 4th bottle. I will use the rest of it on the next oil change.. I think the tranny feels better too by the way..

Phaddi_inc 04-12-2012 06:27 PM
