Dash Cubby Hole/Lid Cluster
 

Does anyone know how to remove the lid over the cubby hole where the nav system would go if I had one? I tore the faux leather covering on the lid by putting some sticky velcro on it to hold my mp3 player (Doh!).

I thought about replacing the lid but now I just want to remove the lid and put the mp3 player in the hole.

Any advice or pics wold be appreciated!

Haven't looked at it, but I assume you need to pull the center console around the head unit off and disassemble from the rear.

P.S. If I remember correctly, removing that is really easy. Pull the shift boot trim, remove two screws at the bottom, and off it comes.

I would look at the DIY for the GT-R button install. It's pretty easy to remove, but I do think you have to remove it from the back.

My decision was to not do this myself and take it to the dealer and have the lid replaced. Found a new place for the mp3 player.

damn I heard its expensive, did you keep the old one or threw it away?

$160 for the door, $40 for install. The door is destroyed. It's missing a piece of the cover about 1.5" X 1.5".

An expensive lesson. But I found a great thing to hold my mp3 player. It's called mountek. Fits into the CD player slot. It's awesome.

When you say the door is destroyed, do you mean it could not possibly be installed in its current condition and be properly functional, regardless of looks? Reason I ask is because I'm looking to find a cubby door to modify for my tablet mounting project.

Looks like you have resolved this, so this is just FYI if someone else has this problem.

A quick look at IP-11 of the 2009 FSM (downloadable from this site) and it looks like the cubby door is part of "34 Cluster lid C (without NAVI)" and not a serviceable part. I assume that means Nissan won't sell just the cubby door.
I looked at the cubby door on my 2009 Touring and didn't see any obvious way to get to the hinges.
There may be a way to get to the hinges once you get Cluster lid C off, but, if I read the FSM correctly, you have to remove the "console finisher assembly" (shifter lever bezel) and both console panels to get to the screws that hold Cluster lid C in.

Edit: Apparently, it is possible to remove the cubby door - and not all that difficult. See comment/pics by cheshirecat a few posts down. Thanks cheshirecat! :tup:

Going from memory here- I would look up any head unit install for more pictures and instructions, but going to reiterate a couple of things anyway

- remove the shift knob
- remove the shift trim
- remove the knee pads
- remove the upper cubby hole assembly that consists of basically this:

obviously yours will still have the door

when you look at the back of it, you'll see some screws, four or six or so, that attach the AC vents and the cubby itself (it's kind of a separate piece) to the rest of the assembly. remove the screws. next, remove the AC vents, they just kinda wiggle loose.

once you've done that, you can pull the whole cubby, including the door, off of that assembly. there might be a few more screws, but it's not exactly rocket science. it's very, very obvious where they are and what parts they anchor.

here's a pic of the door front/rear that I just took to try to illustrate the hinge assembly for the door (i removed the leather cover, its a separate piece also)

all there are is a couple of metal pins and some springs that form the anchor for the hinge. all you do is pop out the pins (the springs have a tendency to fly across the room so be sure to cover them or something if you dont want to go searching for them) and then the door can be "pulled" out of the front of the cubby... it basically will just fall out.

remember that you will have two bigass holes in the front of the cubby from where those massive door arms go up into the assembly. i covered it all with di-noc just to make it a little less terrible looking, although, with my di-noc skills, whether it's truly an improvement is anyone's guess. you can see those holes in the pic above, here's them covered- posted this pic earlier in the week in a thread talking about a cubby tablet :
