DIY: Engine Bay Wire Tuck

I copied and pasted this from my journal today as I have not seen anyone really talk about this easy mod. I think it gives the engine bay a nice clean look :)

Started tucking the headlight wire looms, starter cable and grounding wires on and around the engine and bay area. I got the passenger side done by running most the wires through the fender w/ out having to lengthen or modify them. I simply cut the looms off, wrapped the wires w/ electrical tape and ran them through the fender. They slide right in, there is a gap between the fender and body, about an inch or so. The starter cable that runs over the top/front area of the motor and on to the battery compartment. You can unbolt it from the battery and run it reverse style, back through the brake booster compartment and up through the windshield wiper motor compartment(firewall) and on to the battery compartment w/ no modifications needed. The driver side headlight looms can be done the same way the passenger side looms were tucked. The ugly fuse box on the driver side can be taken apart, I taped the 2 relays up tightly w/ electrical tape, tucked them into the fender and up into the brake booster compartment. Ron found an awesome CNC vacuum manifold kit and linked it on Phunks TT thread. Great find!!! I'll be moving all vacuum lines and manifold pressure sensor behind the fire wall where the wiper blade motor is located via the stock grommets from the headlight wire looms. I attached a few pics of the before and after passenger side and some of the brackets and plumbing removed.

Relays removed from plastic box on driver side. Zip tied them up to the headlight wiring harness after I sealed them up w/ electrical tape.

I did this mod about a year ago and have had no issues arise.

Looks good. I'll have to revisit this thread while my car is apart this winter. Rep'd

Thanks for sharing

Man, looks much cleaner... Thanks for the DIY.. :tiphat:

How long did it take you from start to finish, to complete this mod?

Mitco39 10-23-2012 12:56 PM

I would be worried about rubbing through the wires after years of driving.

:ughdance:
The wires aren't rubbing, but if your worried about that I would suggest keeping your Z stock.

I was doing a few other things while I did this so I'm not sure, but it honestly doesn't take that long. Taking all the plastics off and getting access to the wiper motor compartment is probably the most time consuming.

O&G 01-10-2013 09:16 PM

Updated some pics of the relays I tucked. I had the front end removed today and figured I snap some fresh pics.

GaleForce 01-10-2013 10:27 PM

Good job

jpritche 01-11-2013 06:37 AM

Not to derail, but where did you get the Two red caps in your engine bay.

It's been so long I honestly don't remember. I want to say Zspeed or JSC speed. They come in a pack of 3(windsheild washer cap, P/S cap and Overflow tank cap) w/ a few diff color choices.

simota1 02-06-2013 02:02 PM

o man... you are my hero.... i definitely wanna do this.... :D

Punk86 02-06-2013 03:00 PM

Yeah, I plan on doing this sometime in the near future before all the car shows this year get into full swing. Thanks O&G!

Kingbaby 02-14-2013 07:30 PM

cutting is just the scariest part! I did a partial tuck/reroute...haven't gotten the balls to unwrap and cut!

props and well done

Rid3_FaM0uS 03-21-2014 01:17 AM

O&G! Sim! Do either of you have anymore pics from your tucks?? This thread is a little vauge for my liking. I'm looking to do a full blown tuck and/or as best of one I can get after I started installing my stage 2 CJM system and got to realizing how ugly the injector harness looked without clips to "neaten" things up. For the time being I've been following a decent one from the 350z community but I prefer to be relating to similar things if you get what I'm saying. With my tune on the 11th and currently working 7/12s I just hope I'm not going in off the deep end here.

O&G 03-21-2014 08:47 AM

Sorry the thread was 2 vague for your liking..... Start cutting and tucking. Good luck!

Maybe ZToyZ? That's where I found mine.

Rid3_FaM0uS 03-21-2014 12:41 PM

I didn't mean it in an offensive way sir sorry I would really like to do this but its something ive never tackled before sure its self explanatory I suppose I was just looking more less for info on what you did and or didn't have to splice and extend or if everything went pretty smooth. sorry to bother ya man!

O&G 03-21-2014 01:30 PM

No worries. I tried to be as detailed as I could. It really isn't that hard. I'd call it a very minor tuck as I didn't have to extend any wires or cut too much. My main goal was to get rid of the looms on each side of the engine bay and get rid of that small relay box. Ill try and get some better pics when I get my car off the lift.

You could defiantly get more crazy about it and do a full tuck, I just didn't desire to do that.

I also have the CJM rails and I can't see the injection harness after re installing the plenum.

No need to call me sir.....i was just being a smart ***!

im going to continue to tackle things tonight haha ill keep looking back to this though for tips etc. might do a DIY for this as well much as you have for the stage 2 fuel system like id like too(that means there will be two of each for everyone! yay!) haha. anyway if you get time to take some pics that would be dope man!

btw im going to assume your much older than me; and much more knowledgeable about this platform than I as well soooo, with that being said; you are a sir to me good man! catch up with you soon O thanks!

Ben

O&G 03-21-2014 09:08 PM

Lol, Ill get you some fresh pics ASAP. In the middle of getn things situated on my build. I can't be that much older but I have been in the VQ community for 8 years or so. Id be interested to see what you come up with. Hit me up anytime sir (that's how we address each other in Texas)! Ill be happy to help.

Rid3_FaM0uS 03-22-2014 12:42 PM

haha you should see my car O looms and connectors all over the place. I think im going to tackle a full blown tuck ive already gotten everything out anyway. what did you do with the main harness?(the one that runs into the passenger side firewall) did you mess it with much or not really? also from looking at your pictures it seems you were able to clean up the back of the block/firewall area did you just end up using the existing hole by the wiper assembly to do so? I have yet to start tearing the looms apart to separate the wires and connectors so im just trying to piece together a good plan of action before I have myself a nightmare lol. it seems daunting now but im hoping once I get moving things go much smoother.

btw im only 22 man so your likely an elder to me; and maybe I should move to texas! sounds like they teach others manners and respect out there! haha

O&G 03-23-2014 11:31 PM

Yes the wiper motor compartment is the key. Post pics when u get her complete. Very interested 2 see what you come up with!

as long as you have the pics saved to you computed i've always just used the "manage attachments" function within the "go advanced" function.

I see you are in Ohio, how far from Cincy?

Nevermind, just checked. only a couple of hours

JARblue 03-28-2014 12:45 PM

Use the [IMG] tag, not [URL]

I assume they are hosted on another server (i.e. not the370z.com). I am also assuming you are on a PC and not MAC.

Right click on the image you want to post and select Copy Image URL. Then use that address in the IMG tag. You can also click the Insert Image icon and paste the address into the box that appears.

Rid3_FaM0uS 03-28-2014 04:40 PM

Yeah im just a few clicks north of you wiggi id love to see your car irl sometime you've got some baller @ss collectibles on that thing man! do you go to any of the area car shows? (street life tour or import face off)?

If you've got them in your albums then you're on the right track. I think I figured out what your problem is. When you copy the address of the image in your album, that is the HTML link. Just change the .html to .jpg and viola!

( Click to show/hide )
You can quote my post to see the code, but here is an example.

Here is the link to one of your album pics.

Here is the actual photo using the same link except for the extension at the end of the link.
