mission failed
|
Oh noo! What happened man?
|
I don't really know I was heating it for more that half an hour and the silicon wasn't melting raised the heat and kinda ruined the sides a lil bit but you can't see it when lights are installed
so I didn't want to damage it more, put back and I'll try to get some help next time. |
hmm I used a heat gun, I was afraid the oven method would not melt the glue or toast the plastic housing.
|
I did this last weekend in the over, the first one was a pain the the 2nd one went pretty smoothly.
|
quick question. i reinstalled the headlights, however there are gaps (pretty large ones) between the lights and the fenders.
all the screws and everything lined up so i figured i was good, and put the bumper on, however there are gaps. it got dark out so i couldnt play with it. is there adjusting i have to do to make these lights fit flush? |
Same thing happened to me on the one and I ran out of time. Had to throw it back in the oven i had 1 part of the light that had got caught on something. Everything looked good until it did not line up when I installed in.
|
yea if the housing is not correctly positioned with the lens then the gap will be there... If your screw holes line up but there is a gap then its definitely the housing and lens positioning. Simply put back in oven and then try to slide it into place, if that still doesnt work then simply seperate the two and check for objects in the silicon. Once checked, place back into oven for a little bit of time since u just took it out and then place lens on again.
Now, if your screws arent evening lining up then take headlight out, check back of housing to make sure nothing broke and carefully line-up all the bolts to the holes on the car. Also be sure to slide the headlight in as there is a black piece that has to be sled in a certain way. |
dude that black housing is sex. looks awsome. great job. i really want to do this with my nismo and also do black trim on the tail lights like this guy did. http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot..._3025939_n.jpg

Why do some lights look like the top shroud has an amber color and others don't? Do you have to replace the bulb?
|
No. The bulb that's in there is a double filament bulb. One of the wires coming out of the socket is cut and sealed from factory. All u have to do is extend that wire and connect it to the yellow cable that goes to ur side marker.
|
Ok last time I tried it with a heat gun and didn't work
I'm going to bake it in the oven but can someone show me how to get the wires because I didn't know how last time I tried opening those devils!! |
How long do you bake it and at what temperature if using an oven?

looks good...
|
Ok, so I just finished up blacking out my headlights. I used the heat gun method. Let me just say, doing this mod is not for the faint of heart. From start to finish took me about 11 hours. Separating the lens cover from the housing was no joke! Make sure you take a break every hour or so. I know for me if I'm working for to long, I'll get tired and run out of patience. Patience is key! I'm happy its finally over :happydance:. I think it came out really good. Would I ever do it again? HELL NO!

How much does this mod affect the brightness of the headlights?
|
it does not affect the brightnes of our lights because they are projectors...

The "Glass ball" in the headlights do all the reflecting. |
I'm having some problems...
bumpers off, headlights off. I heated the seal and pried it off on one which took FOREVER. the plastic seems a little messed up :/ but im sure that I can heat it to form it back to how its supposed to be. When I was separating the lens from the plastic housing, the outside of the headlight got scraped on the clear part :( i should be able to get that buffed out right? For the next headlight I want to use the oven method but I dont know what all I have to take out before I put it in there. Can anyone help? I couldnt figure out much without pictures on this one. I really dont want to have to use the heat gun again. Its a PITA. |
Bump?

All you have to take out to put it in the oven is the bulb and remove all the wires you can take off too. |
check out caravanshakas diy he uses the oven method....
|
Does anyone know what sealant can be used that can also be re-opened?
I got some of the ultrablack but then read that it cannot be reopened once sealed, and I would like something less permanent. I know that I could try and use the existing sealant but I don't want to risk any leaks. |
What did u guys do with the huge orange reflector? Paint over it ?
