Taillight Blackout

Hey im wanting to blackout my taillights but leave the area around the reverse lights white. Any input on how i should get it done?Tint, Painted by a body shop, or VHT niteshade them myself?im pretty good at VHT niteshading(ive done about 3-4 sets of lights)but if its not too expensive id rather let the pros do it...Help me out, Thanks!

corbin09 04-17-2012 04:18 PM

I would just painters tape over the entire light, then exacto knife the area you want left then pull off the rest.

Does anyone know how to remove the tail light assembles?

speedfreek 04-24-2012 08:58 AM

+1 on the Bluebat overlays. I have some on order...GTR tails is what he calls them. I should have them installed in the next couple weeks when I do my tint.

Follow like the first two steps of this. Its a pain. I wanted to install stealth bulbs but I don't know when I'll find the time to remove all this crap just to do a simple bulb replacement.

nmjaxx9 05-04-2012 12:41 AM

or you can always get them tinted.

Baer383 05-04-2012 09:11 PM

Mine were painted at my shop it looks so much better then anything else you can get.

In Ga the law states as long as the officer can see your lights 350 feet away under all conditions you won't get a ticket.

I'm sure where you live it's much the same,my lights look dark but with the LED's in them they are very bright and can be easily seen, try some different shades with yours are you will see what I mean.

daisuke149 05-06-2012 03:35 PM

the pictures make them look darker than they really are in person.

oh nice, yeah its def diff with the lights on I know that, but cops have messed with me and my tails aren't even as close to being as dark as yours. I was just thinking with that hue of darkness in my area it would be a issue if I got pulled over, in other words I wouldn't be able to get away with a warning.

Trust me, CT does not approve of tinted/painted lights

Here are some pics of my tail light tint.

I followed this guide to the nuts with all the steps and materials:

HOW TO TINT YOUR TAIL LIGHTS WITH VHT NITESHADES (VIDEO 1 OF 2) - YouTube

HOW TO TINT YOUR TAIL LIGHTS WITH VHT NITESHADES (VIDEO 2 OF 2) - YouTube

I only put on 2 coats of nite shades instead of 3.

The final finish turned out like glass - lots of polishing pays off nicely...

A few questions, how well do these form around the creases and edges in the 370 tail light? Are they hard to install? I'll search for threads on these but maybe you can PM me details, price etc.

Thanks :tiphat:

I was going to do overlays, but I'm comfortable with painting, so maybe I'll give this process a try.

It's really pretty easy, follow the youtube guides and you will have no problems. You do not have to sand much at all with the 2000 grit AFTER the final clear coat, VERY lightly will do the job, or you will have to polish allot!

Don't forget to do the 3rd taillight! - link here

:hello:

Have fun!

nmjaxx9 08-01-2012 09:05 PM

I tried vht on my buddys ford escort once just as a test dummy and it came out pretty bad, so I just went with the tints.

My friend tried vht on his max and it came out good, but when he went to remove it because he wanted it back to stock color, he had a hell of time gettin that ish off. Just a warning if you are using VHT. :tiphat:

The key when applying these to the tails is heat. The heat makes the vinyl pliable and easier to work around the taillight ;).

sorry for the crappy pic.. but this blackout seems like painting the chrome housing from inside the lens.

Is there a way to get replacement tail light covers if you mess up?

what do you mean? How you mess it up? Its pretty straightforward LOL, get the tint done by a shop if you doubt your handy work. :icon17:

I have literally called every place in maine, and no one will touch my tail lights with tint film or paint... Im just going to VHT them. I have a question about clear coating though, if i were to wet sand my head lights and clear coat them will it hold up? They are so scratched up from sand and highway travel its unreal. Or is there a product that fixes that? Thanks

AlexRaymond19 01-24-2013 11:32 AM

like just mentioned in the other thread about blacking tails I would stay away from VHT, a buddy of mine had a bad experience with them. I got my heads done at the same place I got tints for the windows, just ordered the tint of R-vinyl.com and had him slap em on.
