DIY: Smartphone In Car Camera Mount

...finally got around to finishing my in car camera mount today. I have an iphone, so wanted to create something to be able to use my phone as in car camera. The mounting solution bracket uses the head rest poles and is taken from Mighty Bobo's DIY from some time ago.

To start, I ordered this from Amazon.Com for $5.79.

It's not made very good, but what do you expect for under ten dollars. It will serve it's purpose. I then removed the tripod legs by taking out the small phillips set screw in the base.

Next, I replaced that short screw with a longer screw, and using a nylon spacer and some washers was able to get the height just right so it can be tightened onto the mounting bracket.

Here are the pieces put back together using the mounting bracket as a sandwich.

I did a slight variation in only mounting to one seat as opposed to both. So the camera will be sitting about the middle of the car, and at about eye level. Mainly this was done so the passenger seat and driver seat could be moved to different positions without affecting the orientation of the camera view.

Pretty cool, as the swivel head is fully functional so I can adjust up and down and side to side all from the top of the mounting bracket. The smartphone just clamps into the holder horizontally, the clamps are spring loaded, and fits in there rather snugly.

Lastly, I downloaded for the phone the TrackAddict HD app for $5.99 ... this will allow me to provide an overlay of the captured video showing speed, G's and some other things.

Will test out the video capture later, but the car is up on jack stands at the moment ... I am plasti-dipping my wheels and adjusting the coilovers.
