spray painting stock rims CAN IT BE DONE RIGHT?

LOL! as much as it scares me to think of me+spray paint can and my Z im thinking of going for it. Just a good black matte with a couple coats of gloss on the top. Cleaning the wheel throughly,320 grit sandpaper, using etch primer and filler primer and a good spray paint I think it can be done.. I searched and searched and found noone on here who has tried. Am i being a cheap bastard or can it be done. and done right?? any tips?/

djpathfinder 03-02-2011 03:10 PM

Yup, it can be done. Member edconline did it last year...matte black.

Spray Paint Wheels

It can be done if you have patience. It's very easy to screw up though. Preping the wheels for paint and humidity will be your biggest issues.

I did it on the Ray wheels that came with my Lancer Ralliart, this is actually a great how to on the Evo forums. I've had them for 2 years and no chipping.

But essentially, like everyone says, patience.

I would recommend:

- sanding first
- 4 coats of primer
-4 coats of the color you are using,
- 2 clear coats if you are staying relatively flat or matte
- 4-5 clear coats if going for glossy

use playing cards stuck in the bead of the tire to limit overspray.

djpathfinder 03-02-2011 09:21 PM

And spray into the wind so that you won't get any paint on the body.

bradz 03-02-2011 09:53 PM

yah, can be done but too much work & preparation to do it right. I would rather powdercoat it to save the hastle

travnflorida 03-02-2011 09:56 PM

ya i saw a niffty little trick on youtube using index cards between the wheel and tire.. i went to autozone after work and for around 40$ i got everything i should need.. so ya pics wil be coming around monday wish me luck. i might have to do some yoga to get my patience in check

travnflorida 03-02-2011 09:57 PM

tjlazer 03-02-2011 10:39 PM

So i couldnt take waiting anymore.. so i sped home from work and got one caliper done.. it was a good test of how the process was gonna work. and also refined my terrible spray painting skills getting ready for the rims this weekend.. didnt have time before dark to take a pic with the rim back on but you get the jist

SO.....how did all of this go???? :ugh2:

A little interested, have some wheels that could use a fresh look. Anyone looked at doing them with a 2-part urethane and touch-up gun? Figure you can control the paint a lot better from a gun than a spray can.

Aren't you supposed to pull the caliper off to paint?
