2011 370z glove box assembly - cabin filter

1 Attachment(s)
I just did a DIY project to replace the cabin air filter on my 2011 370z.
During the re-install of the glove box assembly, I came across this "tensioner cord" at the back of the glove box assembly.
Does anyone know what this tensioner is for? It pulls out a few inches and then retracts back to the original position. (see pic but ignore where the finger is pointing and look top center area of the pic)
Is the tensioner supposed to attach the the glove box?
I can't find a single instruction video that mentions the purpose of this retractable cord.
You comments would be appreciated.

It's the slow open for the glove box. If you have a copy of the FSM it's on page IP-19.
