DIY - Does any know how to replace the IPDM Controller Unit?
 

I have a 2009 370z.
Mid drive, the car shut down on me.
It's at the nissan dealer - they did a diagnostics scan.

284B7-1BN6A (Controller) - $1,300
23731-JA10C (Crankshaft Sensor) - $140
999M1-ND35C (Group 35 HC Battery - don't know what this is) - $120
total $1560 not including labor.

I already have a few crankshaft sensors.
I don't know what the HC battery is about, anyone got an insight or is this just a new normal car battery?

I'm handy enough if the job is doable by someone that can follow directions well.

Anyone know how hard it is to replace it with a used controller? I can find those online for like $100/$800 new.

Main question is - is this just plug and play? Which to me makes buying a used controller the better path.
Do I need to solder any wiring or do I literally just plug in each wiring into the correct locations per the diagrams?

That is an Infiniti/Nissan part number for an OEM battery. (Google is your friend.)

Removal and Installation INFOID:0000000004450033
CAUTION:
IPDM E/R integrated relays are not serviceable parts, and must not be removed from the unit.
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the battery cable from the negative terminal.
2. Remove the cowl top cover (RH). Refer to EXT-21, "Exploded View".
3. Pull up the IPDM E/R assembly while pressing the pawls (A) on
the back of the IPDM E/R cover B (1).
4. Remove the IPDM E/R cover A (1) while pressing the pawls (A)
at the lower end of the IPDM E/R cover A.
5. Disconnect the harness connector and remove the IPDM E/R
(2).
6. Remove the IPDM E/R cover B.

INSTALLATION
Install in the reverse order of removal.

I've done steps 1-4 in the past to remove the fuse known for the steering lock issue (not sure if this is still the issue i'm dealing with even after removing the fuse).

The removal and install sounds like it's just un-plug and re-plug in the same way so I'm going to go for it myself.

My new question is does the controller unit have to be the exact number as the one they show on the receipt?
They showed I needed part number 284B7-1BN6A.
I found one on ebay for $70 from a 2010 Z (mine is 2009) - 284B7-1BN0A

Found out that 284B7-1BN6A just replaced the older 284B7-1BN0A version. I'm sure they figured out they had an issue with the older one but I'm trying to save so going with the used version. The new is $850 plus $100 shipping...
Do most of you guys still have the original 284B7-1BN0A?

Usually, the last character or two in Nissan part numbers is a revision number. In your case, the old IPDM is revision 0A and the new one is 6A.

There's a good chance that your 0A was only used in very early years (2009 and maybe 2010) and most people will have 1As and above. I'm guessing that a 6A would support DRLs whereas an 0A would not.

Think I have the controller unit figured out.

What about the crankshaft sensor location. Have you personally done this? Do you know the best way to reach this - underneath/top view is it on passenger/driver side?

I found this which makes me think it's the passenger side? On the FSM - Engine Control System section:
The crankshaft position sensor (POS) is located on the cylinder block facing the gear teeth (cogs) of the signal plate.

Huge thanks to SouthArk370Z for the FSM. In section Engine Control System (EC) I was able to find better diagrams depicting different angles. Definitely on the passenger side, lower end. I'll go home tonight and see if I can now physically locate it. I'll post the pictures that helped me theoretically locate it.

thanks but unfortunately I'm not able to find online clear tell either through pictures/videos - just some people saying they found it and they had a hard time getting to it.
I just ordered the POS from Z1 at better price so hopefully I'm able to make a video for everyone this weekend.

I can confirm it's a PITA - I did it years ago. It's lower engine rear toward passenger side like you said. I chose to climb on top of the engine and reach down behind when removing it. When reinstalling it, I did it from below reaching up around the transmission bell housing. Both were time consuming and frustrating, and I honestly can't say one method was better than the other.
