I did it!!!

Well, almost. There is still more work to be done, but I have successfully integrated the Base model AC dial control module to operate the CAN based AC Amp system in the Navi models. The dial module communicates requests to the control translator system I am working on, which in turn sends those requests to the CAN AC Amp. The AC state is monitored and converted back to the dial controller to update the status LED's and whatnot. There are a few qirks to work out, like dealing with the Auto option on both the Fan and Mode dials... and just making sure that it operates everything just like my CAN AC controller. Lets just say that I have removed navi electronics more times that I can count...

I plan to use this to "plug-n-play" swap out my stock navi system for aftermarket without the invasive process the current method requires to the cars wiring. In the video, the Navi system is fully removed and the translator is simply plugged into the OBDII port to access the CAN. There is no other interface to the car. The PCB I am working on will access the CAN from the connector that went to the stock head unit. Next step is to develop a PCB! :ugh2:

Beautiful work and similar to something I want to do. For my pcb I'm going to be using an MCP2562 CAN transceiver and a pic that can handle CAN protocol. Let me know if you want to collaborate at all, and if you're willing to publish what you've found many people will be grateful

Thanks! And defiantly. I started with the Niscan project and rewrote to support the dial module. It was a well written project and a great starting point. I then reverse engineered the dial module protocol and interfaced it. I am using the MCP2515 CAN controller in conjunction with the MCP2551 CAN transceiver via an Atmel 328P (Arduino) to translate the interfaces.

I fully plan on releasing the code fork as a spin-off project as well as the PCB to the community. I just wanted to tie up some loose ends and finalize some stuff first to make it a proper initial release.

One additional thing that I wanted to workout was to provide a way that the translator can communicate the CAN state with a UI app that could be run on a tablet, or android based entertainment system. Something that was an overlay on the screen on the bottom or something that provided the state of the AC system graphically, similarly to how the stock system did it. I think that would be slick. The protocol could be standardized and anyone with app building experience could write UI's for it. Something like that. The original project sent serial control and status to an app, so I think I will start there.

Any further update on this?
I'm not looking for tons of bells and whistles.
I'd just like a "simple" way to remove the Nav unit and insert the 3 analog climate controls.
I'd prefer an aftermarket head unit but have no need of tablet intergration.
