Anyone with a windshield removal DIY??
 

Like title states. looking for DIY to remove windshield, to install some dash speakers :icon14:

Like something custom? ~ Cause you can easily remove the factory top-mounted dash speakers with the windshield in.

My local glass guy wont do it, safelite wants to charge full price, as if they were supplying the glass.
I may end up having a go at it myself, worst that can happen is safelite has to replace it anyways if i damage it.

Dude you are crazy. Taking the front glass out of these cars is a BITC*.

I know, I have had two put in. Paint damage, broken clips on the A-pillars you name it.

If you really must do it, have a no SHI* professional take it out (one that has done a 370Z before), they will likely break that glass too.

Then have the same guy put in a new one.

I never heard of the windshield having to be removed to install/remove those front dash mounted speakers.

Just to be clear... The factory speakers have been out of my car for 6 years, and replaced with aftermarket drivers. (and yes, I did it from inside.)
My intention is to make a custom mount in the dash location for a midrange driver that is larger than the factory grill, so there will be a good deal of modifications made to fit them in, and possibly custom grills as well.
I need room to get my gorilla hands in there to perform the surgery.
I am also aware of the possibilty that the windshield MAY have to be removed if the need to replace them arises. I am working on that design snafu.
I am willing to go through this to make these mods. I never said I was rational, or sane.:icon14:

Well, From the looks of it you may have to budget for a replacement windshield.

Your caught between a rock and a hard place.

But you already know that your less painful $$ option is to simply place those speakers elsewhere :icon17:

Hahaha... the quest for improved sound quality. 2" mid-ranges in the dash just really don't cut it. I've also thought of cutting my dash to fit bigger mids in there. Another possibility is to put in kickpanels (and move up to mod street), although I'm in a 7AT. I don't know if there would be room in a 6MT.

Are you putting new speakers in the dash or just relocating your old ones?

New speakers. Pre ordered a set of Stereo integrity M3 midranges. I hope to have them in hand soon.

I've never done one before, but to ME that seems like a daunting task.
Bear in mind I'm over 50, Shoulder replaced, Knee replaced, round in the middle, so I don't bend and stretch like I did 20 years ago... Lol
Don't get me wrong, I'm not afraid to attempt nearly any task, and am quite mechanically inclined, so maybe I'll look into that route.

If you pull the dash, you could build enclosures for your speakers and get the most out of them. I think you should do it! And you should also put together a DIY so I can do the same thing later on when I finally decide on my "final" set of mid-ranges. :icon17:

I agree … I've pulled two dashes; it's not that hard of a job.

Hint you'll need … release the plastic pins from "under the dash" with long needle-nose pliers. You'll know what I mean when you get there.

I assume you are talking about the pins at the windshield vents... That was the most difficult part of the entire dash removal, and it wasn’t even that difficult.

I have had my windshield replaced... I would rather RE&RE the dash vs. the windshield.

The dash removal is fairly straight forward. Follow the FSM, you can have it removed within 2 hours... We are in similar life stages. If I can do it, you’ll be able to, too.

It's been a while but after doing it a few times in one of my previous cars dash removal took me less than 30 min. if I remember correctly. The issue with the Z is how tight it is to work on for big guys.

From my experience,

Step 1- remove the seats.
Step 2- remove the console
Step 3- follow the FSM to remove the dash.

Plenty of room to work once the seats and console are out.

To remove the windshield you need to remove the b-pillars (the tabs will more than likely break), remove the outer a-pillars, remove the wipers and lower cowl, and unplug the rear view mirror. Once that’s done you need to cut out the windshield and find a safe place to store it. The glass and metal frame on the vehicle need to have the left over urethane removed prior to installation. The glass should have guides on it to help with alignment/spacing during the installation process.
