Best way to remove soot from exhaust tips?

I used to use iron cut and it worked great (don't breathe the fumes!) but it's no longer available. I tried the sonax deep wheel cleaner and it didn't work very well.

Suggestions?

JARblue 02-22-2014 05:21 PM

Metal polish?

H2O_Doc 02-22-2014 05:22 PM

WD -40 and a bug sponge worked on mine; bought it second hand and it was a bit dirty/carbon caked.

I have used

Eagle One's "Never-Dull Wadding" Polish, Works great

dmhenderson 02-22-2014 08:07 PM

Cool, thanks.

GaleForce 02-22-2014 08:33 PM

So i'm going to do a side by side comparison. The guys on the Adams forums swear by "Barkeeper's Friend" cleaning powder. I miss toxic/possibly dangerous Iron Cut from Korea. Soak tips in that for 5 minutes and the soot just wiped off.

Z-Girl 12 02-22-2014 11:36 PM

eagle one with the cotton ball in the can works great for me!

Tadpole 02-23-2014 07:16 PM

SOS pads work great too but be careful with the elbow grease.

Detailers Domain sells it. They are a forum supporter too. Check them out.

You could try Iron X.

ka24king 02-24-2014 12:14 AM

Yep exactly what I use, regardless how much soot is on and how long they have been left works a treat everytime.

ka24king 02-24-2014 11:50 AM

i ordered the auto finesse mercury i will report back with results should be here friday

dP3NGU1N 02-24-2014 01:10 PM

Will any of this stuff take off that titanium burn color or is it safe? auto finesse doesn't mention it so I don't know if anyone's tried it.

Definitely interested in hearing how it goes. Never used to be a big deal but ever since I ripped the cats off and boosted the car, the soot problem is...noticeable.

If your car was really all that fast, the g forces would pull the soot off and you wouldn't have this problem.

Trust me; I'm a scientist. You just need more boost.

mrthomr 02-24-2014 01:59 PM

Would steel wool work? I think I remember using it on my Borla tips many years ago.

Nick@Adams 02-24-2014 02:05 PM

I see you've already ordered, but here's my process for taking care of exhaust tips:
  • Initial scrubbing with All Purpose Cleaner and some OLD towels to remove as much soot as possible
  • Metal Polish #1 with #0000 steel wool
  • Metal Polish #2 with a microfiber applicator
  • Quick Sealant to seal them up

Crappy shot, but something like this:

I'm surprised Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish hasn't been brought up, but since it hasn't, here goes:

Before/After:

http://www.the370z.com/attachment.ph...1&d=1393280510

Both Finished:

http://www.the370z.com/attachment.ph...1&d=1393280510

Stuff is not expensive, and works wonders. Only way to improve it is to get a Mothers Powerball (Small) or Powercone, and use a screwdriver on low speed to work off the excessive stuff and save your arm. :tiphat:

And I have an F.I. exhaust as well Mark, so your will look just as good as these.

I guess I'm not pushing enough boost yet :ugh2:

Wipe it on with a rag, apply elbow grease, wipe off. Works like a charm.

I also use Blue Magic. I think it's a great polish.

Application is pretty straightforward.

- Shake the closed container so some of the polish gets on the lid
- Open the container, use the lid as a little palette
- Use a rag you don't mind throwing away- dab some product onto the rag (it doesn't take much) and buff it on. You don't need to use a lot of elbow grease, but it does take a while to buff on and off
- Get high from the fumes
- Once the surface is clean, I spray it down with glass cleaner (water/vinegar/ammonia mixture) to remove any leftover product.

ka24king 03-03-2014 03:41 PM

so here it is
the auto finesse cleaner
I FREAKING LOVE THIS STUFF

Will this stuff work with the stock muffler?

kenchan 03-03-2014 03:56 PM

yah, any metal polish will work pretty much. i use to use wenol before griot's metal polish.

kenchan 03-03-2014 03:57 PM

i like the inside of my exhaust black, so i only polish the outer tips and sometimes the can.
