Driveway scrapes...

2 Attachment(s)
So I was making a k-turn in my neighborhood the other day by going through some person's driveway which didn't seem so high at all, but before I realized, BAM. Heard some serious scraping. At first I thought it was just the air dam, but when I got out of the car I felt some nasty scrapes from under the front bumper... Pretty deep too... Not too noticeable when you look at the car, but i know it's there (and feeling some guilt about it too) Some paint was hanging off but no exposed undercoating.

I was planning to get opti-coat for my car before this happened, so I've decided to repair his myself, mind you this will be my first time doing a scratch repair that will require some sanding/polishing. Any tips/cautions that I should look out for? What materials and steps would I need for a nice turnout? Would I need one of those porter cable buffers?

Looked up some sites like eHow and the like, but I'm not fully satisfied with their directions. I'm just afraid I'll mess up =/

my beautiful pearly white... =[

I'll post some pics once I'm done moping in my bed lol

 you scraped up your beautiful white Z?!? gawd. I hate that.

:shakes head: probably no more than you though.Just remember, it can be fixed and now that it's done it is done. You don;t have to worry anymore about when it is going to happen. be thankful it wasn't a stoopid raccoon and a cracked chin spoiler (like mine is, a year later) Chin up!

that looks too deep to do a perfect repair. you can try buffing it to make the clear coat a tad smoother, but chances are you will need a repaint or get a lip. :)

kenchan 05-15-2013 11:04 AM

oh wait, you have a '13... no lips out yet.

if that's the case what i'm thinking is to get some scratch filler, some sand paper, and clear coat spray from a local auto store and then getting the exact paint color from my dealer. i already have some turtle wax rubbing compound in my garage. would this be enough material? I already know that my repair won't be perfect, but i want it just good enough for me to not notice it, and apply my opti-coat 2.0 on a seemingly perfect exterior =P

kenchan 05-15-2013 11:54 AM

yah, spot bondo, sand paper (several grits), primer, and factory paint from places like:

Touch Up Paint from PaintScratch.com
PaintWorld - Automotive Touch Up Paint and Supplies

they can make your mix in aerosol cans.

is your car white or does it have pearl? if just white, i think it can turn out pretty good.

if pearl, then nearly impossible to match unless you know how to paint using airbrush.

iamrawr 05-15-2013 12:03 PM

It's pearl white...! oh man...

kenchan 05-15-2013 01:41 PM

well, give it a shot since it's near the bottom. you might be able to get it to match closely. worst case, take it to the bodyshop. :D

Loved hearing scrapes as I drove the dragon :driving:

*Update*

okay so after a few weeks of research i finally attempted to repair it myself. now i've hit an obstacle: after sanding the area and applying a few coats of pearl white factory paint (ordered straight from my local nissan dealer - paint code QAB), sanded again, it doesn't quite match very well with the surrounding areas... (pics provided below). is there a cure time that i have to know about before applying the pearly topcoat? will it gradually blend to be almost like the rest of the paint once given adequate time to dry? your help is much appreciated!

fairly new to the whole sanding/polishing thing. and i'm doing everything by hand. using 1000,1500,2000,3000 grits. and swirlX for sanding mark removal once i finally get the topcoat on there.

sorry for the crappy pics. iPhone didn't know how to focus into the scrapes on the left side. the section that i worked on is on the right of the scrapes. kind of patchy... you see:

all in all... how do i blend this...?

Your problem, factory paint... It blows...

Dr. Color chip, or buy an aerosol can off eBay

iamrawr 06-16-2013 09:58 AM

Should I complain to the dealer about the product not working as intended?

Sorry, I don't think you can blame the factory paint in this instance.

OP - take your car to a body shop or the dealer and get it fixed properly. You have a new car, let the professionals that know what they are doing fix it.

Agreed.

iamrawr 06-18-2013 02:56 PM

^it's on the bottom of the bumper... i'm not paying $300+ to have them repaint it for some scuffs in places where people won't really be looking at. i'm just using the bottom to see how well it matches with the seemingly hard-to-match pearl white (i've realized now) so that i can better touch up the minimal scuffs on the side of the front bumper. i just need it to be nearly perfect so that i can finally apply the opti-coat. originally, i trusted the dealer to give me a best match because i was a little skeptical on third party products. someone enlighten me.

and gurneyeagle, what variable(s) seem to be the culprit of the paint not matching properly?

on another note,
i'm not completely sold yet with dr. color chip results:

Review - Dr.Colorchip paint chip repair system on 2008 Lexus IS F.wmv - YouTube
Dr. ColorChip Review -red04montels - YouTube

however, judging from these videos... maybe it just requires more layers to have it blend with the surrounding paint more nicely? like put enough to have it slightly raised and then sand it down to even out everything? will paint layer lines show? thanks everyone =)

I would just go to paintscratch.com and order some matched paint in a spray can and rattle can it, trying to feather it in as best you can, then use some clearcoat to finish it up. It will look great and you won't notice is since it is so low on the bumper. Thats what I did on my previous car..

some scratches are deep. would you recommend some spot bondo to even out the surface first?? i don't have much experience with spray paint as i've just been using small blobs of base paint to fill up the scuff marks. and nothing is really into the original primer thank goodness.

So just leave it alone then if it's not that noticeable or in a noticeable position...?

I have a large scrape by my front bumper (due to my fault), decided not to repair it. Why? Not because I didn't have money, but because chances are, it'll probably happen again anyway. Oh and my car had exactly 200 miles when it happened.

I would also recommend Dr. Colorchip. Worked fine for me for other small scrapes/rock chips. I just had to let it sit for a good 10 minutes first.

Mikes350z 06-20-2013 02:03 PM

If no one can notice and it only bothers you, you have two options as everyone keeps telling you.

Ignore it or pay the money like a grown up and have it professionally repaired. You have a '13 Z with sport package, that isn't a cheap car so dont cheap out now.

If it truly bothers you do the right thing and have a professional do it, you admitted you have no knowledge on the matter, if it was easy there wouldn't be auto painters making a career out of painting vehicles we would all be doing it ourselves.

6MT-Z34 07-21-2013 04:54 PM

Or you can just get the new Carbon Signal front lip they made for the 13 Z lol, you'll be the first in the states to have a lip on the 13 Z's

Chuck33079 07-21-2013 05:13 PM

Cutting corners and going cheap on paint or body work issues will always bite you in the ***. Either live with it or have a body shop respray it. Pearl white is a bastard to match.

Bret86944 07-22-2013 02:18 PM

The underside of my front bumper is destroyed. No point in fixing it because there are always going to be bumps that will scrape. And no one can see the underside unless they get down on their hands and knees. I know it sucks but life is too short to worry about that crap.

tjlazer 07-22-2013 03:16 PM

Yep get some filler and sand is smooth and spray it. Will look pretty good. Or pay $300+

Minsu 08-08-2013 11:50 AM

OP where in jersey are you i think i saw your car at dunkin donuts in fortlee!!!!!!!!
