Never clayed my car. Anyone recommend a cheap effective clay?

I just used the Meguiar's kit two weeks ago. $17.

This works pretty good. Used it on the Frontier and you could feel the crap coming off while you are using it.

I use Riccardo Yellow or Blue depending on the vehicle. You can give Nanoskin Autoscrub a try too.

Anyone have an estimate on how long this will take?

I did mine pretty hastily in about 30 minutes; the car was already thoroughly cleaned & waxed the week before and got another wash just before the clay bar which I did with the car wet. I'd say give yourself an hour to be thorough; maybe longer if you have lots of bumps and stuff all over the place. Even though I did the entire car, most of the rough stuff was on the front end of the car only.

I did my car in about 45min with the Meguiars Kit.

i highly recommend against meguair's soft blue clay. it is pretty coarse and will scratch your finish. i speak from experience. it's soft in the beginning but then coarses up for some reason as you knead it. this is the only clay that i had this problem. i use it for glass these days if i have water spots.

for the z's paint i use griot's yellow clay (mud). it's super soft. use disposable gloves.

I ended up getting the Adams clay kit and a bunch of other stuff from Detailers Domain. Haven't used it yet though as it's been raining.

I'll give the Griot's clay mud a try the next time I do my car. Thanks for the heads up Kenchan.
