Wash with water only?

I just had my car detailed. Full on clay bar, polish, etc. It looks great. My detail guys says "No more soap. Ever. Wash it with water only."

Really?

Umm, no.

Flushnismo 07-16-2011 03:47 PM

Hmm...good luck with that.

happytheman 07-16-2011 04:03 PM

Ummmmmm......:wtf2:

Edit: I think it's time to buzz the tower!

TreeSemdyZee 07-16-2011 08:13 PM

Was he talking about the car?

Matthew 07-16-2011 08:19 PM

Wow!!

onzedge 07-16-2011 08:39 PM

Water only? Maybe in crackhead land.

happytheman 07-16-2011 10:36 PM

Listen, soap acts as a lubricating agent to help remove dust and grime. Water will get most of it off, but you run the risk of marring your paint by not using soap.

Nuff said.

Edit: Just noticed my omission of the word NOT!

exactly! The detailer may have done a good job... but he doesn't know s#it.

kenchan 07-17-2011 11:55 AM

maybe he was talking about laundry soap (detergent).... :icon17:

Methodical4u 07-17-2011 12:55 PM

a quality car shampoo (mild) will cause little degrading to your wax or sealant... just don't use dish soap or anything harsh that would strip off that finish.

But yeah like we all already said that idea is just stupid.

AdamsPolishes 07-25-2011 07:32 PM

WOW... and this guy called himself a 'professional detailer'??

In a way I guess it makes sense, wash without water, screw your paint up and you'll be calling him back for more work on a monthly basis... quite the scheme he has going there! LOL

I would not put them past it.

Meric1837 09-15-2011 04:31 PM

I guess if the car wasn't that dirty and you had super soft water it might work, but I wouldn't touch the paint with anything like a sponge. Still won't get it very clean though. Just get the Optimum No Rinse and get busy, that's the easiest stuff I've ever used. The whole car is polish-clean in 45 minutes.

red6spd 09-15-2011 04:50 PM

Does he wash his body with water only??

azn370z 09-15-2011 05:15 PM

A long time ago some people thought washing their cars with soap would strip the wax. I think that's why some people think soap is bad for the paint. It's not a problem if you use quality car soap. I use spray wax afterwards.

happytheman 09-15-2011 05:16 PM

BWAHAHAHAHAAA! I'm sure plain water suffices to get one's body clean, right? :)

onzedge 09-15-2011 05:16 PM

Washing a car (or anything) with water only is called "rinsing".

Griots garage car wash FTW. Organic and it stopped killing my grass LOL.

azn370z 09-15-2011 05:20 PM

I use optimum car soap and pour the leftover soap water on my lawn.

If I was him I'd recommend you never wash it, and only bring it back to him for wash or detailing every other week.

how much was the detail? $250? yup, he's a business man.

Soap does remove some wax. It depends on the soap as to how much wax is removed. But to not use any soap to wash the car?

:wtf2:

I think he was being a wise guy... All the dirt won't just slip off the car now that it's clean LOL. That's the idea he was trying to make i think.

happytheman 09-20-2011 08:53 PM

Yup, until the day his Z is sold or retired it will never again need soap! :)

If it were only so simple.

SmallermouseZ 04-07-2012 11:45 PM

Weirdo!

LakeShow 04-08-2012 02:33 AM

Did he also say to dry it with sand paper after?

dAvenue 04-08-2012 02:38 AM

No way a detailer would advise water-only. Maybe you misunderstood him if he suggested a rinse-less wash?

bigaudiofanat 04-11-2012 09:17 AM

Use a good soap, with a wash and rinse bucket. And make sure they have grit guards in them and your paint will be looking good for a while. If you have a dark color I recommend picking up a foam gun to help lift the dirt off before you even start washing. Oh and 2 wash mits one for top one for bottom.

JoeVL 04-11-2012 10:22 PM

Bar soap would be difficult....hmmmm.... :rofl2:

happytheman 04-11-2012 10:54 PM

Don't bother using the bucket method. Just drop your washcloth on the driveway and spray it clean before washing each panel. It'll be fine! :ugh2:

Sibze 04-21-2012 10:16 AM

I can understand him saying no more "soap" a good car shampoo should be used not what you use to wash dishes but the just water part is stupid, the whole idea of using a shampoo is that to cushion taking dirt off the car and avoiding scratches etc
