2009 Nismo Spoiler Fading
 

Hey everyone! I just recently bought a 2009 Nismo in the silver/gray color. The paint on the top of the spoiler is heavily faded and pretty rough to the touch compared to the rest of the car.

The paint on the side of the spoiler is fine and the top is where the problem is. Is this a common issue? Did Nissan use a different paint for the spoiler or do you think mine was repainted?

Lastly, is there any advice on how I can fix this or does it need to be repainted? Is this the clear coat and could be buffed/sanded? I'm new to detailing but have seen some pretty amazing things accomplished.

P.S. I have applied a small amount of Turtle Wax Rubbing Compound on the wing with a soft sponge to see if it would help. These pictures were taken after, it did seem to help a little, but as I mentioned I need to learn more about detailing. Let me know if you have any questions, thanks again!

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that was an after-the-factory paint job.
I'd try buffing the crap out of it and use some extremely good quality wax.

If it's clear-coated, that's the clear coat oxidizing.

Def agree on the paint correction recommendations first and to offer a quick/low cost alternative - this would be one of the rare instances where I would suggest considering plastidip. The spoiler doesn't look bad with the top in black and will hold up long enough for you to save up for a proper repaint.

Message junkman here on the forum he would know what you need to do.

The clear coat oxidized from the sun. You can wet sand and buff the paint back to life but eventually the clear coat will oxidize again unless you add more clear coat. Its the same concept as headlights fading if that helps you understand it better.

I think the clear coat is done... wet sanding/buffering would remove the oxidized clear coat and the base paint alone would become dull quickly.

vinyl wrap the spoiler is another option.

Your are wasting your time with any type of polish/compound etc.
The clear coat is gone.
If you plan on keeping the car,I suggest getting it refinished.

A rear top location needs regular apps of a good wax. The previous owner apparently
did not do this. In addition,the car may have not been garaged.

Do it right. Remove the spoiler and get it refurbed.
