plastic window on my car cover eating my clearcoat?

I recently purchased a 40th anniversary outdoor car cover from a member on here in like new condition. I put it on for the first time last week and took it off today for the first time so it's been almost a week on the car. then today where that plastic window was sitting just above the license plate and under the hatch lid I noticed some marks in my paint. upon closer inspection it looks like those spots were from where the plastic was touching the clear coat and it had eaten through? I tried some quick detailer, no help. Then some goo gone...nada. I then tried some Meguiars ScratchX and with some work it made it better but not perfect. I worked on that for a while and then I clay barred the spots and waxed over the top. it looks better now but if you look really close you can still tell the little ripple marks where the plastic was touching the car. I have never seen or heard anything like this? The plastic looks brand new on the cover and is clear and has no residue on it. The car sits in a garage undisturbed and out of any extreme temps. thoughts?

I know I should have taken pictures but I was freaking out and wanted to get it fixed quickly

The same thing happened to my 40th. I put the same cover on and didn't realize the plastic was sitting on the bumper. I left it like that in the sun for 3 days and my guess is that the plastic got so hot it baked into the clear coat. What I ended up doing was cover the plastic with some material from the bag that comes with the cover. I mention this on this following thread:
http://www.the370z.com/nismo-370z/70...car-cover.html

The damage didn't look too bad and only noticeable up close.

Wow glad I'm not the only one. I'm going to see if I can't buff more of it out next time I detail the car. Mine wasn't even in the sun and still did it! Shitty oversight on the cover. I found plastic in general can do this and found examples while researching it. Thanks for the response

Thanks for the heads up!

OP, you went about fixing that ALL wrong. You did stuff out of order and stuff that was useless. You seriously need to watch these videos.

Lol thanks junkman. I actually have watched your videos, I was just in denial and hoping it wasn't through the clearcoat. Seemed crazy that the small plastic square sitting on paint could do that. Have you seen that before? I will do the PC and your method when I detail this fall. Thanks for chiming in!

Yes, I have seen that before. The heat from the sun is breaking down the chemicals in the plastic and causing them to "off gas", just like paint does when it iis curing.

apparently you don't even need the sun as this happened in the garage and the temp never got above 80 or so in the garage.

Wow, ugly. :(

yah, ive seen and read about this.. i think it was a couple years back someone's nismo rear bumper got damaged the same way.

my quicksilver (was it?) car cover has the rear plate window, but no such damage. but i only use it in the garage in cold months.

Weird. I really like the cover but am going to cut out the plastic or cover it. Sucks to learn the hard way. Most would never notice the marks now but I do of course
