License plate lights always on?
Hi, owner of Canadian model (i.e. with DRL)
Recently I just noticed my front and rear side marker lamps and license plate lamp are always on when driving (it's an 2012 auto) - and it's that way since I bought the car new last year (by old pic of the car). The combination switch was in Off position; not "Auto". I checked the DRL relay. I tried pulling the battery connector off for a minute hoping to reset the BCM. I had Morrey Nissan looked at it during the oil change last week, they said it's abnormal but blamed it on my license plate LED. This afternoon I'm going to take my Z in for another check. But, before I wasting another one or two hours with them, can you guys confirm that those lamps are supposed to be off during driving? Thanks. Al |
Took the car to dealer, spent two hours there, at the end the tech said "it's normal for this car"!
The 13 6MT in their lot didn't do that. He said he'll locate a 12 to verify it. Anyone with a 12 or earlier, 7AT Canadian model care to check it for me? Thanks in advanced. :tiphat: |
While you are waiting for an answer, you might try searching for "Nissan TSB" (Technical Service Bulletin) and/or "Nissan recall" and see if you can find anything on your problem.

Checked all 58 TSB - no mention of it. Thanks anyway. :tiphat:

correct me if i am wrong but isn't that exactly what the DRL's are. From what i know all Canadian models can't turn off the lights even in the OFF possition. As long as the car is in ON mode.

Turning off DRL completely may be as simple as disabling the DRL relay but I haven't looked at the schematics/drawings. I don't remember seeing DRL in the FSM I have but, since I don't have DRL, I haven't really looked. If you can supply a link (or which page in the FSM) to the schematics, someone ought to be able to tell you how to do it. |
Thanks guys for chiming in.
But it's not the DRL - it's the side marker lights and license plate lights: the little lights (white at front and orange/red at rear) on the out-most-corner of the light assembly and the lights above the license plate. In other car they're on only when you turned on the headlights, but in mine they're on whenever the car is put into gear (again, I didn't turn the the light switch to auto or ON position.) The second dealer I went to last Saturday told me "it's the new style that Nissan new car have or will have it..." So far I couldn't find any car on the road that has the side marker lights and license plate light turned on at bright daylights like that... |
i hate how my lights stay on >:(

Lmao just realized I opened a new thread and you guys were talking about it here already...
Anyway my buddy and I looked at the schematics already and the drl relay IS connected to all those rear lights. Basically we can never turn them off while driving. How gay Solution: remove drl relay. Add some sort of LEDs or sth for the front for popo since no lights will be on at all. Done. Problem solved |
mine is a US model and i've never been pulled over for not having lights during day time. I don't think anyone cares about it
|
BTW, what's wrong with the lights on…??
It is a safety feature and why goes against it…?? |
my car(2010 fully loaded) has all lights on in the headlights, tail and license. but side makers(fender) should not be on.
|
THANK YOU, Luciano13. :tiphat:

DRL's will shut off if the e-brake is engaged, but I don't think u want to drive around like that. But u might work out a bypass with the same switch.
We have same car model so I'll check the side marker light issue this evening. |
