As far as advice/suggestion goes, I think the cop was probably having a bad day and went to town with you. Also in the GTA having ANY sort of cover ANY part of the license plate ( not including the stickers ) is illegal. Like others have said, most cops don't bat an eye on the covers but it's something they can nail you for.

As for the license plate, you're SoL on that one, it's an auto write up for the cop. Move to Quebec if you don't want front lic plates.

I'm totally speculating here but, I think he might have seen a note for the week before in their database. The summon he gave you is basically an ultimatum for you to fix everything and prove it to the crown, sucks that he also threw in tint and cover.

imho, don't give them any reason to pull you over in the first place and you'll save yourself a lot of headache!

it was near lakeshore and carlaw. very true with your last sentence, i didnt know about this, i thought it was just going to be a ticket for the no front plates and im not sure but he only said my last infraction was in 2015, not sure for what tho, so who knows if the cop from last week put anything in the system, another person said they dont write down warnings on the comp like when they pull up your plates, only the tickets youve been given the last few years or so, but ill have to ask the guy across the street thats a york region cop, im sure its pretty much the same as them.....

sooooo stressed....... i hate the front plates lol... i can live with the front plates but the no cover too now ? damn province, i want to start a petition for the no front plates like our other provinces but i doubt many ppl even care...

tints gona be a hassle too.

ya he was definitely pissed about something to hit me with so many tickets, especially when the last infraction he mentioned was 2 years ago.....

im never taking small streets again, i was going north and he was going west, we both stopped at stop signs and literally a second later he got me.
so stressed and confused as to why he went nuts with the tickets.. ugh..

does anyone here NOT have front plates? and or covers?

so if this gets tossed out and i do it again, then what happens? i wont but im curious. the only thing i would still want are the covers, wish i could show you a pic of how clear they are... i took pics during the day and in the pitch dark with only the moonlight and no street lights and you can still see my plate next to another car with no cover

you might want to google those charges, pretty sure you can find out the legality of the clear plate cover and tint-darkness.

regarding the front plate, just mount it and take a pic, show it to the judge, you should be fine.

on the plate cover, you might want to take it off, take a picture of it and also show it to the judge, I guess you didn't know even a clear regular plastic cover could be illigal.

good luck man!!

I've known about this new tint law since the start of the year, it only applies to cars made after Jan. 1, 2017 as per the article, how any cop can tell the age of a car with one glance is bothersome and might get some of us Z owners pulled over just to confirm the age. My tint is 15% on sides and rear, sides are now illegal but my car was made in 2015.

Regardless OP, that really sucks, especially the clear plate charge, what BS, I know the law and don't have any plate covers on my cars but have never heard of anyone getting a charge for it.

This. So this.

I wonder if the 407 cameras have a hard time with reflections off clear plate covers and that's why it's such an issue there. Are they as aggressive about peeling plates?

Just another reason to avoid the GTA altogether. I'm happy in my little corner of paradise down here!

Especially when the province charges you over $300 for personalized plates, but won't let you protect your investment on a low-slung car on the crap roads they make us drive on or on any car in the winter!

just some major bad luck, i wake up today and im still stunned after a bad nights sleep. you have no idea how much i hate the front plate lol..... 5 years no issues minus a couple of tickets for it that were dropped to $45 and now this.. its like atleast let me put the covers on them and it wont bug me as much to have the front plates on..... and i wonder how its going to look with 15 to 20% sides,%5 little triangle window and %5 rear.... would it look weird? or have it all 20% around or 15? ughhhhhhhhh...

at first i got paranoid, i was like wait so if this guy got me in my area will i run into him again...??? than i thought, i havent seen him in 10 years or more soooo??????? and its almost always the front plate missing that attracts them so if i put that on theyll leave me alone? but they always stare when they see me driving it even if it were to be all legal..... this whole thing sucks..

If its the end of the month. just disappear for a bit.
cops know cars are a huge source of income so they hit us hard.
only way to win is to not play the game...

It would be wiser for the police to be stopping criminals and not collecting revenue for the city/province.

Zeetah 04-03-2017 02:49 PM

But they let me go 9 out of 10 times and never even mentioned the tint or cover.

Only the following 4 provinces require both (in order of population):

Ontario
British Columbia
Manitoba
New Brunswick
The following 9 provinces and territories only require rear plates:

Quebec
Alberta
Saskatchewan
Nova Scotia
Newfoundland and Labrador
Prince Edward Island
Northwest Territories
Yukon
Nunavut

I'd love to start a petition

But they won't even get any money if I do all 3 and they throw away the tickets, I would have had to pay 40% if I went to court if he gave me a normal ticket and that way they could have collected money from me. Maybe this guy was just super pissed about having to work on a nice Sunday
