Rear Cantilever Suspension
 

Has anyone tried doing a rear cantilever suspension in the back of their Z?

I don't know why you would want to. It would weigh more and more crap to fail. Don't get me wrong it would look sweet but more pia than a true coilover set up.

I'm only considering it Masterbeatty, I'm not sold on the idea. I was thinking a good set of Hypermax shocks would be fine but was thinking of other possibilities. Sometimes it's easier to see if anyone has blazed the path.

I've seen the cantilever setup done on sand rails and they do look awesome... but I want functionality more than looks. This is what I dug up from an older post on an RX7 forum:

1. Reduce unsprung mass.
2. Easier to adjust/tune (ride height, shock rates, spring rates and motion ratio can all be changed without tearing the entire rear end of the car apart)
3. Weight placement in the center of the car and possibly lower than standard.
4. Easier to run massive tires. (Great reason. More mechanical grip!)
5. Wow factor (not good enough for me)

Can't we already run massive rear tires?? Hah I run 315 hoosier A slicks for autocross and can't imagine needing much more.

I knew 285 wasn't enough. I have huge traction issues. I wish I could say this.

Have a 345/30-19 on the rear now. :D

As for the cantilever set-up. You better be a suspension engineer to design and figure it out. It's not a simple bolt-on.

Ok, so the rear tire size isn't a great argument either. :)

Looks like it is WAY too much work for this platform. I'll leave it to the sandrails and get some good coil overs.

How about Sliding Pillar front suspension :) Keep your camber equal to body roll through turns.
