I think i know whats wrong now
 
So remember i said my steering wheel shakes a bit when i brake.
Well this morning as im driving, i noticed mly left arm feels lower than my right and it seems that my steering wheel needs to be maybe a centimeter to the left for the car to go straight, if i get an alignment will it fix both issues?

i doubt it since the brake system and the steering are two completely different things.

Steering wheel alignment being off is unlikely to be related to steering wheel vibration under braking.

dammit. Alright well gotta get it done anyways, lets see if it fixes it. How much do you usually pay for the Wheel Alignment. That when they take my wheel off and put it on a machine that spins the wheels correct?

It is possible that the alignment will correct the issue. It could be the reason your steering is vibrating under braking. This was happening to me. Also it could be your rotors are due for a change(possibly warped)

I'm pretty sure that's called Balancing.

Alignment is when they make sure all four wheels are pointing straight ahead and standing up straight (to OEM specifications of course).

I paid $300 for a 5 yr agreement at NTB. I get an alignment about every 3 months because I can.

Since im not tracking I dont see my rotors being warped. But If there gonna take off my wheels, might as well. Lol

It doesn't matter if you're tracking or not. You can warp rotors (severely) on the streets without racing or anything either.

Hard braking, staying on the brakes at the stop light after a hard brake... things like that can warp rotors.


Currently my fronts are warped and there's a nasty vibration under braking. I have new pads and rotors in my garage, but I'm just going to wait a bit until these pads wear a little more then swap everything out.

warped rotors or one or both of the front tires are out of balance. I'm leaning towards the latter.

Just so everyone is on the same page...

"Warped" is a term often used incorrectly to describe a rotor with excess pad deposit. This makes the surface of the rotor uneven, which is what causes the vibration. The scenario Boob gives of sitting on the brakes at a stop light after hard braking is excess pad deposit. The pad material basically continues to melt onto the hot rotor in one spot while you're stopped, and then you're left with a uneven portion of the rotor that can be extremely noticeable under braking.

Truly warped rotors are pretty much exclusive to track driving, although I'm sure there's some idiot that managed it on the street. But I think you'd have to be driving like a maniac to do that on the street...

Ahh i c, ok ill do the alignment first while getting my dent fixed then if it still shakes i guess i gotta try the pads and rotors next.

Alignment is different from balancing (what you said before). I'm getting one done today for 89.99. I had some people that recommend me local shops to do it for 80 but I don't mind paying 10 bucks extra for it done at nissan


You can probably get your brakes inspected before anything is serviced in case that isn't the problem but warped rotors seem like a possible cause for the shaking. But isn't your car pretty new?

Well the purpose of the alignment is to set the camber caster toe angles to the specifications. If the angles are off it increases tire wear, reduces fuel economy

that could be from the crown of the road... which bascially is normal.

Z1 2-piece rotors are :yum: for a :yum: price. They have less expensive one piece rotors as well that you can get slotted and/or cross drilled.

I run EBC slotted rotors in front. No issues.

Maybe it's just a combination of traffic and the warm temps out here? I dunno.

hummm... id swap the pads and get those rotors turned. if it still persists, replace the rotors with aftermarkets (mr.jar's recommendations).

I already bought new front rotors and pads all around. I just haven't installed them yet. I figured I'd wait until the pads get a little more worn down.

I may do the swap when I get back from vacation, I have a nice long weekend then to bed them properly.

That's a bit rape. Firestone is up to I think $200, but you can get $20 off by just asking for a lifetime alignment

Hell, I'd pay $500 to someone that I know cares about the car. NTB sure doesn't, which is why I pull the car in myself and watch the guy the entire time :icon17:

I think I paid $280 or so IIRC. Either way, I'm already down to <$25 per alignment and I've got another 18 months on the agreement :tup:

I get one every time I get new tires, and usually once in between each rear tire change. I throw the car around the corners a lot, so it definitely starts to wear uneven by the end of the tire life. It's probably not necessary, but it's not a big hassle either. YMMV
