Paint removal
I bought a used 11 z base. The previous owner did a horrible job painting the calipers. He even painted the brake pads. I'm not a big fan of painting the calipers. What's a good paint mover I can use to take this paint off?

 Did he even take them off the car to paint them?
If you're working on the brakes, any brake cleaner should work pretty good. On the base calipers I would think almost any paint thinner would be fine, too, but I would test it myself first. Or confirm with someone else that knows for sure whether it's ok. |
If you are going to take the brakes off of the car, you should be able to just get a rag/sponge with some XYLENE or regular paint thinner and just scrub it off gently. Should come off nicely. Wear gloves..
Also, when you go to reapply brake caliper paint. At AutoZone/Oreileys/wherever you go.. grab a can of $3 Primer as well. When you have removed the old paint off.. Wash it down and sand areas if needed. Then mask off any areas, prime the wheels with the $3 primer, wait 20 min, and then your golden. You can also throw a coat or two of heat resistant clear coat over the top of the new color brakes if you decide to paint them. Might help with scratches and chips from rocks. |
If the paint thinners don't work you can also try aircraft remover ONLY on the outside of the calipers...fair warning use heavy duty gloves and mask off anything paint/seal/rubber related because it will eat through it, its strong stuff.
