Powder coating calipers

Is there an issue powder coating the Sports calipers? What prep is required other than cleaning them and pluging up the holes? Do they need to be stripped down or can you powder over the black coating?

it would be best to strip them down as to not harm the seals. you'd be better off using a brake caliper specific paint however.

talk to Mike on here THEPOWDERCOATER.COM he did my 350Z Brembo's about 5 years ago and still looking good

Just make sure you remove everything that can be removed from the calipers so nothing gets ruined or powdercoated in place. Bleeder screws, seals, pistons, etc. And then plug up all of the holes.

Yup...Mike's the man on this stuff. I've done a few sets. You really want a clean metal surface to PC to. This will mean a chemical strip, bead blast, or a burn off of the OEM finish. I like to remove all parts, seals etc before stripping and baking. The secret is always to have a good surface to work with just like paint, and only stripping the finish really gets you that..

Thanks Gus and Steve!!!!
I have powdercoated over 1000 sets of calipers in the last 4 years, and probably over 25sets of our calipers since the G37 came out. You can powdercoat them with seals in place, but it is not the most desireable way to do it. I fully disassemble them, completely strip then re coat and apply logos. depending on color, (reds bleed) the logos are usually painted and clearcoated, but sometimes they are vinyl stickers. Vinyl will hold up just fine to heat, but can also discolor if the brakes are overheated or coated with dust from a track session.

I will probably be posting a group buy tomorrow.
