Brake rust! WTF
 

just recently i started getting really bad brake rust. Its making the inside of my rims look horrible. It seems to be dripping from inbetween the rotor and brake dust shield.

Any suggestions?

Change pads recently? Ever cleaned the inside of the dust shields?

Sonax Full Effect wheel cleaner and light agitation with take care of it. Kind of pricey, but its awesome stuff. Some pads kick more dust than others, so I would try changing pads if it gets really bad.

just make sure you spray them clean really well and use a soft wheel brush to get off rims. Should be all you need to do...

if your car is constantly getting wet or in drizzly/foggy conditions, the rotor's metal will rust. that's normal.

i suggest you use a nice spray sealant on your wheels after each wash.

brake dust or rust? is the salty Fl. weather that bad on the metal? yikes!

sounds like you just need to clean your rims more often.

I'm with djtodd - check the dust shield first. The others have good theories - naturally dusty pads, saltwater environment, &c

rotor rust and brake dust are two completely different things.

you can have low dust pads yet have high rust deposit on wheels.

I think its the dust shield. im gonna pull of the rims tomorrow and rotors. I got some rust remover for autozone.

With some rotors the hats are not painted which will cause them to rust in wet and salty conditions. You can go ahead and use the rust remover, but in the future when getting your rotors be sure to pick up a set with painted hats such as DBA or Centrics.
