Calipers have weird "stuff" on them...

Any ideas how I might be able to remove this? I would like them to be shiny again, this **** makes me sad...

I say remove the rim and get to wiping them down. Make it a habit of wiping them down every time you wash your car and rims.

That is your brake fluid weeping. Make sure your valves are tight. As for cleaning them, probably some extensive work...I'd ask Mike the powder coater. He cleans and preps then regularly...

This happens at the track regularly btw.

Btw, that's pretty much into the clear coat of the caliper, so it won't wipe off.

thats permanent staining, nothing you can do other than complete repaint/powdercoat. Are you tracking the car?

I would be more concerned about why the brakes are weeping by the bleeder screws. Did you flush them recently? Were they over tightened??

JAYNO20 08-04-2012 05:33 PM

Not tracking the car... It hasn't leaked that I have seen. Maybe before I bought the car... Any chance buffing them will help at all or getting powdercoated my only option.

you can try some buffing compound, but I don't think it will do anything for you. You can also try to get it warrantied at your dealership (long shot)

What did you wash the wheels with? Some of the washs out there will stain if you don't rinse it good. ;)

That's what I am thinking MIGHT have happened... Can't remember if they were like that when I bought it or not.

What do you think the odds of the dealership covering this under warranty are?

It's not a cleaner - it's definitely heated brake fluid that weep-ed and went down your caliper. I had it on mine, and it was EXACTLY the same. No doubt, Mike's seen it a ton of times himself.

Ask your seller if he ever pushed the brakes hard, or have you pushed them pretty hard yourself?

Mike 08-05-2012 09:35 AM

My theory is that when the brakes get hot, the caliper expands slightly and allows just a trace of fluid to leak out around the threads. On the track, I got the stock calipers hot enough to melt the powdercoat on my wheels and they can even get fairly hot with aggressive street or mountain driving.

I get this even on my stoptechs, but they are anodized, so it doesn't stain them.

This all reminds me that I should seriously pick up the stillen brake cooling kit before my HPDE at Summit in October...

I haven't pushed them hard (at least I don't think I pushed them hard enough to have this happen).

Anyone care to give me a clue how likely it is the dealer would cover this? They just recently replaced a broken gas door lock mechanism that was broken when I bought it, but they did it under warranty without asking any questions so maybe this caliper thing isn't too far off?

It's worth a shot, that's for sure. You could argue your brake bleeder valve is leaking for no reason and as such, it permanently stained the finish on the calipers.
