LEGIT or NOT? AKEBONO BBK Z1motorsports

ive searched many sites and the bbk kits on the sites got, brembos, stoptech, and so on. and just for the rears or fronts, they cost over $1500+ !!!!!!!!!!!!! there not even the whole set.

but on z1motorsports. there selling the akebono BBK for (was) $1395 on april 10, 2012.

(now) starting at $1575, overall. the price only went up like $100, when i added the options from the $1395 and $1575, both came to $2000.

are these shitty as hell for an entire set for only $2000? or something is up?

here is the exact link,

Z1 Motorsports 14" Akebono Big Brake Master Set (350Z/G35)

anthonyy 04-12-2012 10:56 AM

Z1 Akebono Sport Brake Upgrade Package

thanks again

TerribleONE 04-12-2012 10:59 AM

do you have the base? Can I ask why your upgrading? Looks? performance? You wont ever really see a difference on the street... the base brakes will hold up fine

Having upgraded brakes is never a bad idea, mine Sport Pkg. brakes have save me a few times.

I completely agree.. however trust me on the street it would take a very seasoned driver to be able to even tell the difference... just my :twocents:

Oh, and I upgraded my brakes from the base, and still have this opinion

UNKNOWN_370 04-12-2012 01:27 PM

The sport pkg brakes work great when you add Z1 lines. Couple it with the stillen brake cooling kit and slotted rotors, and there's no stopping the akebono's

brucelidat 04-12-2012 01:33 PM

I read that the brake lines don't really affect performance but was more for pedal feel? Did you find they helped performance?

On the street maybe not, but at the track they will effect performance compared to stock after a few laps of braking.

No but its an added safety feature that keeps the lines from flexing under pressure. If you are getting a bbk. You most likely want to do some aggressive driving. If you are going to do aggressive driving. You want to insure that your brakes won't give out under strain.

Steel braided brake lines.

People don't spend $250 in installing these things for better brake feel. Often some will dismiss this mod because they don't feel any difference other than firmer brake feel.

brucelidat 04-12-2012 01:55 PM

I have the sport package and go to the track occasionally, but not often. I will look into possibly getting the z1 lines

brucelidat 04-12-2012 02:04 PM

so what's the difference between their regular and premium SS brake line kits?

The premiums are coated so there's no metal on metal friction etc that can cause minor issues.

brucelidat 04-12-2012 03:32 PM

i see, well the price diff isn't much so premiums it will be if I do this

UNKNOWN_370 04-12-2012 03:36 PM

Go with the coated set. I believe the difference is like $17 give or take a few bucks.

daisuke149 04-12-2012 04:12 PM

If u get the bbk from z1 u can call them about having thr calipers powdercoated.. So then u can choose beyond the infinit, nissan or 40th look.

brucelidat 04-12-2012 06:17 PM

no brake kit for me, just the lines maybe.

Does any one know how much they charge and how well the job is?

I'm thinking of either 40th anniversary (boring), teal (project mu style), or orange (stock GT-R colour)

Waiz 04-12-2012 07:55 PM

Z1 or ConceptZ are excellent options for Akebonos

Gotta call em for.cost but the powdercoat quality and durability is amazing. Alot of people here running with the sets

UNKNOWN_370 04-12-2012 09:53 PM

Anyone know any reputable powdercoaters in DFW?

get it done through Mike, I think he still has a core set available since hes not selling his.

Mike 04-12-2012 10:47 PM

The quality of the Z1 powdercoating is extremely high. I stake my name and reputation on it, as I do their powdercoating, and I won't send anything out of my shop that I wouldn't install on my own car.

Mike 04-12-2012 10:49 PM

As for their pricing, you need to understand the volume they do with Nissan every year. For example, Nissan produces the JDM 99 front fascias once or twice a year, and they buy the entire lot that is destined for the US. They are a huge operation, and very on top of things.

I noticed some of your work. You make our Akebonos look like a $5k brake kit.

Mike 04-12-2012 10:55 PM

thanks!

You lost me with the pricing analogy.

shadoquad 04-12-2012 11:31 PM

As disclosed in our PM's, I have this exact brake kit, and it's treating me well.

I can only say kind words in my dealings with Z1. They've treated me well, and I have a number of their products on my car currently.

its for looks and performance. if i wont see a difference, i still want it for looks. ffs i have a $50K car, with brakes and calipers that looks like fkn nissans cheapest car, the leaf or cube or w/e..

and the reason why im hesitating to buy it is because i dont understand why its SO CHEAP for the ENTIRE KIT, when on other sites, its 4K ++++++ for a whole kit, and they usually sell it in front pairs or rear pairs.

and z1 is not responding to any of my emails, that ive sent the last 2 weeks, 1 each week. so ........

TerribleONE 04-13-2012 10:50 AM

Its because its just the akebono sport package... not an aftermarket 6 pot 4 pot BBK.. However still much better than the base brakes in regards to looks, and track performance

are you guys talking about the stainless steel brake lines, that cost 90$ as an added option? from the z1 akebono site? i might as well ad it. its $90 for 4 ss lines, if im spending over 2K, why cheap out on a few extra dollars.

pistons im guessing. if its not 6pot 4pot. how many pots is it?

i still dont know why they dont reply to emails. if this is the customer service im getting before even ordering the product, this will detour me from them.

The Sport Akebonos are 4 pot front 2 pot rear. I believe the base are 1 and 1.

Call them directly. They will answer all of your questions.

Mike 04-13-2012 07:39 PM

Just call them. Maybe whoever the email is going to is on vacation or something.

Z11,
I apologize for the lack of response. Could you tell me exactly who you were emailing? What email address were you sending your inquiries to?
Please understand, we are in the beginning of the 2012 Z Car show/event season. Some of our staff will be coming/going to various events around the country. We had a large portion of our staff leave out to attend the ZAttack event in Nashville, TN. Regardless, we attempt to answer all emails as quickly and effectively as possible.

I try to keep an eye for any posts related to Z1 and attempt to act quickly to offer aid or respond to questions. To be honest this post slipped by me.

To answer your question about our pricing, we do purchase large volumes with Nissan and other suppliers. This level of volume gives us better pricing in some cases and allows us to have better buying power in others. We developed this kit in house and tested everything on our own personal vehicles.
- Z1 300zx Akebono Kit --> Fitment Tested on our 1200 RWHP Widebody 300zx and Track/Street tested on my personal Non-Turbo Slicktop Track Car
- Z1 350Z/G35 Akebono Kit --> Track/Street Tested on Shanna Floyd (the boss's wife's Momentum Performance Single Turbo G35)
- Z1 370Z Akebono Kit --> 100% Bolt on with a few items we have discovered from working with so many Inifinti G37's and Nissan 370Z's.

The 370Z Akebono Conversion Package is 100% bolt-on. There is no R&D involved, crazy brackets or special hardware sicne it is 100% Nissan parts (for the most part). We do offer aftermarket brake pads and brake rotors as an base option for those wanting something other than OE. We price our products as fairly and competitively as possible (this has been a platform of ours from the beginning). Through our connections and relationships with various vendors, we can offer some products substantially lower than our competitors. I will admit, there are some products that we cannot acquire cheaper than our competitors and in some cases, due to our networks, we cannot get some products at all.

Trust me, there are no gimmicks here. We keep these kits in stock and can ship everything out the same day in most cases. If you would like, please email me directly at Dustin@Z1Motorsports.com. I will be more than happy to work with you and answer any questions you may have!

You're on the right track...
The other BIG factor is that aftermarket kits..like STOPTECH..have
TWO PIECE FLOATING ROTORS which are lighter and run cooler. Those alone are at least $800 a pair right there!

O&G 04-14-2012 11:36 PM

OP makes a Z1 post once a week, Z1 is a stand up company with great products and pricing. Just buy it already.
