How are your brakes?
09 with sport option..
Not been too impressed with the brakes on my Z, any one else in the same boat... Changing lines and fluid today, next up some HPS+ pads all round , but jeez, they dont seem too clever. |
i only street my car so they do absolutely well for me.
are you running stock wheels or no? |
I've done plenty of Canyon Carving and their fine so far. :)
|
Maybe its just mine, or maybe I brake later then most when up in the hills?? I dunno just not that great fot the 'on paper' set up, hopefully the upgrades will get it a little more responsive and solid.
Just hill work , no track time as yet in the Z and stock RAYs |
also depends how much weight the car's carrying too.... :icon14:
|
185 lbs and half a tank of gas,,, I have a lot of track time with spec'd up brakes, I feel I have a good understanding of a decent pedal feel and expected response relative to hardware, just feel mine are lacking.... dissapointed I have to upgrade for light work, like the oil cooler scenario I guess

yah, sounds like braking technique. 185lbs + gas is hardly enough to overwelm. :)
triples, your kid's okay with all the turning? people usually get motion sickness when im carving canyons. :D |
They def are over whelmed, but granted even on track I brake as late as possible (not in this Z) but thats my driving style, I use the weight transfer to my advantage.. couple hundread for initial upgrade, see how it flys I guess.

The main 'feel' issue with the stock sport brakes is the pads. If you just don't have confidence in the brakes, get more aggressive pads. I've found that the stock pads have horrible bite and feel, but if you smoosh them, they'll still stop you. But once you drive with track pads, you'll see what the Z's brakes are capable of.
Swapping fluid and lines won't do too much if you haven't changed the pads. The fluid just helps withstand the heat issues for longer driving sessions. |
Bleed the system
|
With 9K miles ? - **** Id be back to Nissan on that ;-) my Pedal is firm, just end result isnt great, maybe I expect to much?
I will do the lines and Fluid, see how it is. |
Brakes are always my number one priority. I don't take shortcuts with brakes. I try to go with the best and most capable system available. AM Performance Brembo Caliper and Rotor kit meet that criteria for me and they are dang sexy too!

Thats a sweet set up - FYI SS lines an fluid flush, better pedal feel and def stop me sharper. Pads next

I think they are lacking, sure they are good enough for DD, but even for light track work they need something, it depends on your expectation I guess, and what you are used to from a good braking system.
If yours are great for you I am happy for you, enjoy. |
Thank you.

NP Bro ;-)

Every time I've hit the track with XP10/XP8 Pads on the Sports brakes, I get nothing but compliments from the instructors. They all seem to be impressed with the braking power. *shrug*
|
How are the pads DD? do you change them out just for track use or just run with them?
Hows rotor wear? |
these calipers are fine for the track, just not on our cars. They are a very high quality caliper. I have a little experience, since my powdercoating business specializes in calipers. I've torn down and rebuilt just about every brand on the market and these are a quality item. It really comes down to cooling in my opinion. My friend with a G37 Coupe has no issues when tracking.

your car can only stop as well as your tires, what a waste of money, donate it to me

Mike just wants some new toys for his car...

If they don't come in by my next track date, may 28th, I plan on running the akebonos at Barber with hawk DTC60 0r 70 pads. btw, brembos are off the car and stripped down, ready for refinishing and sale if anyone wants a cheap front upgrade. Requires 19" wheels though, and I don't have any of those anymore. |
Haha, that's cool Mike. I'm still looking forward to your review of the Stoptech's. It seems like a huge chunk of change to drop for a BBK, but if I get more serious into tracking (8+ days a year), I might go ahead with it. So far I've been pretty happy with the stock ones, except for some minor issues.
|
They are uber expensive but Sharif gave me a great deal on them, and I figure if I'm gonna do it, may as well go with the best!

so 5 minutes each caliper!? you're quick... its fine to just swap pads and leave the rotor time and time again after tracking? |
If you can handle the noise and the brake dust, go for it. The carbotechs do work when they are cold, just not recommended. Mine's been on the car since my track day two weeks ago, of course I have only driven it 40 miles since....
