Gauging Interest: FULL Titanium Eccentric Bolt Eliminator Kit
 

Hello!

In my pursuits to constantly improve my Z, I have finally found a way to put together a Titanium (Grade 5) Eccentric Bolt Eliminator kit. From what I can find on the web, this has never been done before. A stack consists of a bolt, two washers, and nut. This combination can be easily scaled between quantities of 2 stacks (for Camber or Toe) or 4 (for Camber and Toe) with minor cost savings per stack for the latter.

I included a dimensional drawing of the OEM setup, as measured on my own vehicle.

Blue = Bolt Head

Green = Existing Eccentric Washer

Black = Car attachment point

Red = Nut

Grey = Bolt Body

The bolt and nut in the Titanium kit are more dimensionally optimized, reducing OEM lengths by approximately 2mm each.

The original goal was to make the most elite kit possible for my own vehicle, but I came to wonder if anyone else was interested perhaps there are some cost savings for bulk/batch ordering. The best I can get so far is about $30/stack before tax/shipping, but that's as a single person...I wonder how low it can go.

Most all of us here use Lock-out kits because the Eccentric's slip. We go with SPL midlinks or if we go to true type coilovers we use SPL Toe arms. On both we use the SPL lockouts.

I appreciate the insight as to what most owners have found effective. It seems that both the SPL and the Z1 kits use a mix of Class 10.9 and 6061 metals for their kits. This is a very cost effective way of accomplishing lockout, but the main driving factors in developing this Titanium kit are to avoid the propensity for fastener corrosion and provide a better strength to weight ratio.

You can't tell me you like the idea of your camber/toe lockout bolts looking like this eventually:p

Have you had a specific bad experience with titanium hardware?

Not so much sell, as this is merely a labor of passion offered to our community. I'm planning to get this for my Z and if anyone else was interested in doing the same, we could possibly get a discount in materials by bulk ordering. 0 profits

I live in the south, I don't have any issues. As far as the SPL, Both. The alignment is also much easier.

The act of selling a product has nothing to do with profits. My comment was simply a PSA for your benefit.

If you don't disassemble the stack, you wont see where most of the corrosion is developing; in the mating surfaces of the threads. This happens because the tight spacing between bolt and nut threads compromises the Zinc or Chrome-over-Zinc coating. The corrosion susceptibility in this area is compounded by it's propensity to draw in water via capillary action, bringing with it dissolved contaminates. Living in the south has little bearing on this effect; while I agree with your likely presumption of less road salts, the south sill has thousands of miles of coastline where salt spray travels quite a distance from the water and coats every surface. Apart from that, unless you live in a desert, it still rains; this draws in dissolved conductive and corrosive contaminates.

If you're still unconvinced, please reference this comprehensive test (link) conducted by the Army Research Laboratory about the Corrosion Behavior of Sacrificial Coatings on Grade 10.9 Fasteners. You'll also see that the effect starts in the mated threads.

This post is not seeking opinions on whether current market kits are acceptable. I have peer-reviewed scientific results for that (link). If current kits are good enough for you, please move on and enjoy your kit. This post is aims to find like minded owners who seek better for their vehicles.

I did seek better. That crap is gone. Eccentric lock out kits installed with SPL Midlinks and camber arms.

Will say, I have no worried about corrosion with my steel lockout kits, but enjoy the passion here.

You should compare the pricing to other kits. I think what’s going on here is that the use of titanium typically comes with a hefty premium and to some extent complexity. The current products on the market use cheap hardware found at your local home depot.

Personally, if I were to spend extra money to add titanium for looks and weight savings, I would start somewhere else where you can show off to people lol. Really depends on price difference…
