Front Subframe Replacement

do I have to remove the engine and transmission to change the front subframe .

The very first step according to the FSM is "remove engine and transmission assembly". I'd imagine you have to remove the transmission but it might be possible to support the engine from the top while you disconnect the subframe member - other smarter people will know the answer to this. Dropping the whole cradle and lifting the car off it is the easiest method of removing the engine tho; and then you can disconnect the subframe with it out of the vehicle.

It this were me using a lift or even on the ground I'd use chains or straps and put them under the motor mount arms and go over the strut bar to hold the engine up. Use rags under the chains so you don't scuff up the strut bar. I would also put a block of wood or a single post under the bell housing to hold the weight of the trans and engine. Then just start un bolting things like the lower control arms, outer tie rods etc etc. I would definitely have someone help you especially if you're going to be doing the job on your back. I would have to be under my Z right night to give you more information but I'm nice and toasty in my blankie having a Guinness. Let me know if I can be of more assistance.

And how the hell did that happen?

You've got additional problems over just the subframe. The oil pan is toast. :owned:

I replaced a front subframe in a G37 and I didnt touch the engine/trans other than unbolting the engine mounts. But I used a hoist and a jack to support the engine in the air. Gonna be a pretty crappy job on the ground but it could be done. I would find someone with a hoist and work something out with them.

Go to harbor freight and buy an engine hoist. Take off upper manifold. Get a piece of angle iron, drill it so it mounts to two manifold bolt holes. Tape lower manifold off. Bolt angle iron. Lift with hoist. Replace subframe. Return hoist to HF bc "the welds were subpar."

That's what I did, minus replacing the subframe, when I busted a motor mount and the other one seized so I couldn't do the trick where you lift the motor with a jack underneath.
