Just curious, can anyone tell me what causes this on my rotors?

Hi all,

I was at NJMP Thunderbolt track this weekend and noticed my discs looking like this for only the front 2 rotors. It went away later in the day and seemed to have no real effect but I am just curious as to what is was and what caused it. Pads are Carbotech XP8.

Front, looking blotchy?

Rear, shiny.

Same pads on rear? And what are your non-track pads?

XP8 all around, I don't switch pads because I don't daily drive it and have no issues braking with them on streets.

I don't know what it is but mine does that too. I figured it was a combination of heat and pad material. Like you said it goes away and it doesn't seem to have any influence on braking. I this it actual looks pretty cool lol! By the way I'm running XP10 and 8's!

Yeah I started with XP10s all around and switched to 8's in the hope that there might be a little less metal on metal sound but nope. When these wear down I'll be going to 10 front and 8 rear.

That is the start of hot spots. Carbotech's are bad about that, especially when you daily drive them, since I had the same issue with my 10/8 combo.

The noise issue will be present with Carbotech, no matter what compound you go to, unless it's the Bobcat pads. If you want to cut that down, look into Endless ME20's. That's what I currently run. They are almost completely quiet, half as much dust compared to the XP's, and are better on the rotors so far. I might suggest going with a ME20/22 front/rear pad setup to get less bite in the rear, since you might not like what I prefer.

You can talk with John Thomas at Corner3 Motortsports for pricing.

Pad deposit from sitting. Hot pads and rotors from tracking, then parking the car.

I have Carbotech XP8's all around and don't get those pad deposits. I only had them when I bedded in the pads.

Probably so, but I don't know what brakes are for anyway. I have a slow buggy by the way and a bad neck. :) Hopefully not for long on either one.

I never park and/or hold the brake during track days. Sometimes I use a wheel chock even.
