Weird noise from front end
2015 370 nismo
Car currently has a GTM stage 2 super charger kit installed however I don't think noise is related There is a odd clunk/clicking noise that occurs when from a dead stop and accelerating mildly to aggressive may get 1-3 clicking sounds ...also get the same sounds with aggressive braking ..seems to be coming from front passenger side ....I have also noticed that if turning during the acceleration or braking it seems louder .....I also have a steep drive way from my garage and while backing out car in neutral and only rolling from gravity sudden braking will cause the same noise. To me it seems to be connected with the front end movement up and down however I can't make the noise from bouncing the car front end. And I can't see anything loose or visably "wearing/moving " from under neath the car. Doesn't seem to affect anything while driving ..no vibration or anything. Has anyone had anything similar or any ideas of what it could be. |
I have a similar issue but it only occurs after the car is warmed to >180. I'm still stumped but your issue does sound similar.

Check the axles. There is a TSB for the 350z, but Nissan never issued one for the 370z. It causes clicking from stops or low speeds. The fix is to re-grease the face of the axle that mounts to the hub on the rear with a special grease. It's a Molykote grease, with the name being Dow Corning Molykote M77 paste. It's not cheap for the size, but it's the only one you want to use.
Here is a link to the 350z fix. The 370 is basically the same, with the difference being the axle nut torque being different depending on which version of axle nut you have. Clicking Noise from Rear Axle, - MY350Z.COM Forums I will also say my brand new OEM hubs click under heavier loading, but I have never had any issues out of them from it. The old ones did it for awhile, then stopped. The new ones did it as well, now it's starting to fade away. |

The noise is strange ... it's a clicking/creaking depending on how hard I accelerate or brake .. I have noticed it at higher speeds going over railroad tracked .. but the most is when turning and accelerating ... it's not so much the motion from forward or backward it seems to the up and down of the front end that I can replicate it |

I'm also having a similar issue with the clanking metal sound from the front passenger side. It just started to get more frequent (unless I just really started to try and hear it) but either way I'm interested in what you find out this weekend, keep us posted!
|
Those of you that have the noise. Did any of you replace the front sway bar with an aftermarket one and swaybar links?
|
Sounds like sway bar end links or bushings.
|
Everything I have other than the supercharger kit is stock ... and only 15k miles
|
UPDATE .... dealership claims noise is coming from front coil spring passenger side .... they are ordering parts and I'll see if they are right
|
They will have fun test driving your Z. Did you leave it on valet mode?
Btw - hope they get it fixed. |

Still not much luck ...the have replaced drop links .. springs.. top of struts.. checked everthing connecting ...checked the brakes ... last thing the are checking is the wheel bearing which is being done today ....if that isn't it ..I have no idea
|
.....changed wheel bearing/hub assembly .....still no improvement ...not sure what it could be ..mechanic says it's more than likely coming from the solid motor mount on the passenger side ....even though he couldn't verify it I guese I'll have to keep looking
|
You sure it's not the rear axles? Probably need lube if it is.
|
fill up your car before you give it to them otherwise they will put 87 gas in it trust me
|
They did the rear axel lube and all tsb on it .... I hate sounds I can't locate lol
I can also make the sound rolling backwards with engine off ... and when I apply the brake it will click ... no sound until I apply the brake ... and going forward it will click if accelerating moderately ... seems to be the movement either the front coming up or the back going down .. not really forward or backward .. and not really " brake" related ... but braking and making the front dip quickly will make the noise any any speed. |
Will the sound occur if the car is on ramps and you bounce the front end by hand? If so, have someone bounce the front while you listen from underneath.

I've had plenty of funny noises that freak me out and every time so far it's been something loose in the passenger compartment. Not something from the car, just something I've left in moving around while I corner/accelerate/brake. Like a water bottle, loose change or something that's come out of my gym bag. Sometimes after I have a passenger, the seat belt does not go back perfectly and you hear the buckle bang on the plastic. That one freaked me out for a couple days before I figured where it was coming from.

I'll try to get a video or sound clip with my go pro attached out side of the car |

Hey there. Have you guys by chance figured out the problem here? I read the thread and it sounds strikingly similar to what I am experiencing. Front clunk. Not at high speeds. Reverse to park or park to drive moderate speeds or from zero.
Had the rear driveshaft replaced already due to the clunk in the rear but now I'm taking into the dealer for the front end clunk. Thanks! |
I haven't been able to locate it yet ...I'm really feeling like it's coming from the brakes in some way ..I have noticed that rolling backwards down hill ..in neutral applying the brake will cause the sound to rolling back wards and applying the e-brake it does not .....and I have noticed that there is a little more wear on the rotor on the front passenger side compared to the driver side and that is the side the noise is from ......I'll see how it goes after brake change and turning rotors
|
You seemed to have checked everything on the suspension that would be the problem.
Only two things I can thing of: 1) Dirt/stones embedded in pad(s) 2) Dust shield coming in contact with rotor OK, three thing: 3) Manufacturing defect in pad(s) or rotor. Eg, soft spots in rotor. |
This sounds like a loose article, i.e. a small bolt or screw, inside a steel chamber. It only happens when certain level of acceleration and deceleration is achieved. There is a reason why the noise does not occur when the car is moved solely vertically.
|
UPDATE- I know this is a old thread ..but I did find the noise .. it was the rack and pinion ..loosen all the bolts and re-torqued them down and haven’t had the noise since.
