Hey guys,

So I've been trying to search on the forum on how much it would cost to install brakes but haven't gotten much luck. Like the title says, to anyone who PAID to get their brakes changed, how much did you pay? I don't have the tools or time to DIY. I already have all the parts (rotors/pads/fluids/lines). I have an 09' base coupe.

I don't think it really matters how much anyone else paid. Your gonna have to call local shops and ask them how much they'll charge YOU.

Ps. I just did my install by myself, there was a few hick ups but that was with the powdercoat. There's a good DIY on the g35/g37 forum with good instructions.

Keep in mind no shop will provide a warranty for labor on any customer installed parts.

Hmm... Part 2 doesn't exist. Really though part 2 (assembly) is part 1 in reverse.

Couple of points, placing the jack stand under the control arm is not a good idea. I place mine under the pinch weld with a slotted hockey puck in between.

Using a torque wrench as a breaker bar is a no no too. Good way to ruin the torque wrench.

Job can be made easier by turning the wheel hard left/right depending which caliper is being worked on. Use brake clean to clean the new parts. Apply a thin film of grease on the rotor/hub mating surface. Rears are more challenging because of the parking brake.

I just wanted to see what prices other people have paid, that's all. I'm not trying to get fu*ked up the butt and get overcharged. I just think it's crazy how the prices can vary. The cheapest so far is $300. One place tried to charge me $600+. I just want to make sure I'm getting a decent deal..

I paid $140 at a local speed shop in the good ol burbs of Chicago. Thats fronts and rears ON the sport brakes lol.... They did good work however.... the vendors sent me the wrong damn parts.... so technically I paid $140 for them to do the job... twice lol....

People will quote you high bc the kind of car it is... When I was calling around asking, "How much to change brakes on my Z," I was getting crazy quotes.... When I asked what their hourly labor rate is?? Then followed with asking how long does it typically take per axle to change brakes.. I was getting SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper "quotes" lol..... I guess people hear sports car and wana bend you over right away...

ps.... Ive installed brakes 100 times on many cars, however the older I get, the more valuable my time becomes as well... So ill save you the " do it yourself brah! way cheaper! grab a sixer and enjoy the feeling of working on your car" bc I definitely understand not wanting to do it urself..... just my .02

It's not that hard. You don't have to remove the calipers to change the pads unless you will resurface the rotors

I mean exactly what I typed. Shops typically don't provide any warranty on customer provided parts. Why should they. If you buy their part and there's a warranty issue, their parts supplier reimburses them for labor (or at partly). So you take a gamble, save a few bucks or get full parts/labor warranty. Either way you pay - marked up parts pricing upfront or additional labor costs down the line.

In the case of brakes for example, lets say the parts you provide squeak after install. Who should be responsible for the remedy...

Brakes are one of the first jobs I ever did myself on a car. Rotor and pad replacement is fairly simple with just basic tools required. And I think for the ease of the work, shops generally overcharge for brake work more than almost anything else. Other than jack, jack stands, and a few sockets and wrenches needed for just about any car maintenance, the only item I've purchased to do brakes is a Power Bleeder with Nissan adapter for $70, which makes it super easy for me to bleed the brakes solo.

I will also argue that it is often more inconvenient for me to have to take my car somewhere for repairs. I don't have to worry about arranging alternate transportation while the car is in the shop, which can be a ridiculous hassle sometimes. And I know that the work will be done right with care and consideration for the vehicle. Mechanics who don't care about my car are the main reason I started to DIY everything I could on the Z :twocents:

i got a 2012 touring w/ sports package so i got pads at 125/pair and rotors at 125/each and was sourced from a dealership using a VIN look up.

quoted around 250ish for the labour at my shop.

if it were pads alone, i'd just jack it up and slip n slide! (i've read here someone who tracks literally jacks it and takes like 5 mins a corner to swap the pads)

the shop i go to could have ordered but i opt'd to try get them myself. oh i've also brought my exhaust for them to change. each shop is different but all that matters is you get to drive your car!

Replacing pads on the sport brakes is ridiculously easy. All you have to do is remove the wheel. Once the wheel is removed, you can just slide the pads in/out of the backside of the caliper without even having to remove it :tup:

$250 from my local tuner shop. They said the pads need to be beveled if not already, which my old were not. Pads were doing this flaking and squealing action with plenty life left before replaced.

I've never worked on brakes before in my life. Also have to bleed the brakes. I'm a noob.
