What's that 'card slot' under the steering column do?

It's under the steering wheel on the right side. Does it do anything or is it for anything in particular?

It's for cards :P

Division 09-01-2009 08:05 AM

Is it bad that I have no idea what your referring to?

xiven 09-01-2009 08:31 AM

fobgina?

m4a1mustang 09-01-2009 09:19 AM

He's driving on the wrong side of the car, so it's probably the fobgina he's talking about.

I have no clue how you guys shift left-handed. I'm righty, so my left hand is absolutely useless in motion. :icon18:

When i have gone O/S before it does feel weird shifting with the right hand. I suppose it's just something you grow up with and get used to it. BTW not saying a word about your left hand being useless:icon08:

No worries, mate. The right hand takes care of everything. ;)

:roflpuke2:

Isn't that what the left is REALLY for, just numb it first (someone else that way). Whoops way O/T now:bowrofl:

Majestik 09-01-2009 06:08 PM

Lol. You guys crack me up :)

err.. What's a fobgina? Sounds dirty...mmmmm

edit: worked out what the fobgina is but too small to be practical...

The slot I'm referring to looks like a credit card slot. You need to look under the dash. It's pretty low.

m4a1mustang 09-01-2009 06:10 PM

Fobgina! LOL

I saw the slot the other day and mentioned it on our meet. We all looked at it and couldn't work it out. It cant just be for buniness cards as thats a stupid place for it. Someone needs to read the manual as I'm too lazy. Im sure it'll be there.

Wrong side? It's a Japanese car and in Japan they drive on the left like us Aussies. How is that wrong? ;) :stirthepot:

Our way keeps your dominant right hand on the wheel to steer which I reckon is better. I have driven in Europe in a left hand drive car and it feels strange but it's ok. The gear shifting part is straight forward, it's the traffic coming from the other side that's that hard part to get used to. I actually got into the car on the wrong side after I filled up with gas once... :tiphat:

At first i was going to ask if you looked on the correct side of the car. Seeing the photo is different for you guys:stirthepot:. Now i want to know what it's for LOL, as the guys above said would be a silly spot for Bus' cards.

m4a1mustang 09-01-2009 08:41 PM

Go look inside it.

evse82 09-01-2009 08:51 PM

Just to take this way off topic... I drove a test monaro (or pontiac lol) we were sending off to the US once, and slammed my left hand into the drivers door so many times trying to change gears... Its good having the right hand on the wheel though... anyways the card slot...

Shine a flash light inside the slot! Are there any electrical looking prongs?

Do you guys have Electronic Toll Cards (ETC) in Australia? Maybe it's an ETC slot?

Nah we don't, we have tags (little devices) that stick to the winshield so i doubt it's anything like this.. I know in Japan they do have the cards (my friends r34 gtr talks in Japanese when we pass toll points on the eastlink). Maybe they just have it there on ours but it's not functional.... could be just a slot with the electrics missing...

What's that?ETC.

MrBMW 09-01-2009 10:18 PM

I'll go and hop in the car now with a flashlight and see if i get a shot of what's in there. My dealer wasnt sure about what it's for either LOL.

MrBMW 09-01-2009 10:40 PM

I believe they actually are just Business card holders. It goes pretty much straight through with some backing. There is a spring loaded piece on top inside to what I presume is to hold down the cards or what ever you put in there.

m4a1mustang 09-01-2009 10:43 PM

That is interesting.

NissanZ46 09-02-2009 05:34 AM

That's not really that interesting - I reckon its just a Nissan way of removing the ETC card slot and making something look half-useful, ie the business card holder.

Majestik 09-02-2009 07:21 AM

I think I've worked out what it is. It's a emergency condom dispenser. Just in case we wanna bend anyone over into the boot...

Nissan Frontier trucks had a similar slot by the steering wheel. A flat card shaped device was inserted there. You could remove it, and the truck would not start!

I think he's right

evse82 09-02-2009 10:32 PM

Yeah I had a quick flick through the manual and in the alarm section, there is in bold writing something about a card. It doesn't elaborate on it but it, but it's a one sentence line. I couldn't find anything in there about condom dispencing but hey, it could be in the service manual you never know lol....

BluZ 11-12-2009 12:40 AM

That's a good question, and one that no one has answered yet it seems. I've just found it myself.

Good place to keep your fuel card if you have one, or business cards perhaps. I've seen some countries where they have a swipe card for road and parking tolls, so perhaps that's what it's for.

Anyone with other ideas?
