How long can you store tyres?

Hi guys

Just wondering if you stored tyres in a garage bagged up away from heat etc. How long do you think you can keep them before they start to perhaps go bad?

Reason im asking is saw some stock 370z rims/stock tyres cheap. Almost cheaper that replacing our current stock tyres. Was thinking of buying them to use when mine wear out. Although the way i drive e.g last car in 6 years i replaced tyres once lol...........

I don't really do alot of long distance 20,000km a year if im lucky usually alot less.

I want volks later on but realistically don't think i will have the spare cash next few years for that as i have other things to buy.

Yeah that video explains it all lol. Kinda made us think cos my dad has a 1989 Jaguar which he hardly drives and has only done 30,000km still with original tyres.... now we are too scared to drive it lol

wow thanks guys, think i will pass on this deal then as most likely don't think i will need to change tyres soon enough to make it worth it.

If you drive 20Km a year, buy the tires! You'll be using them within 1-2 years, no?

O.K., so leavin' 'em on the wheels while a car's just parked there is bad; how 'bout storing them on their sidewall(s) for a few months, nothin' on 'em, not even another tire? I've read in Pop' Mechanics and other magazines that it's O.K. to do that.

Yeah I always thought that would be alright, but after watching that video, (if it is all fact that is) it kinda makes sense that rubber compund would harden over time, it does in pretty much any other application.

Once a tire is 6 or 7 years old (from the manufacture date on the sideway) you should throw it out. It's the standard in most countries. Storage for a year or 2 isn't a problem if it is done correctly.

road tyres you can store 3-4 years before they start going bad.
