Dont want to start an OZ oil thread but...

Ok, I have done the 2000km break in period and want to do an oil change before I start to really drive it hard. I went to Nissan and brought the oil that they apparently use for all changes but it says its fully synthetic on the bottle so I'm not sure about using it so soon...

Anyway, what is everyone else doing? Leaving the factory oil in for 5000-10000kms? Changing it earlier to something else - if so what?

Yes I have read the US oil threads so I know about ester, group iii-v grades etc but wanted an OZ perspective... Maybe this oil is the Nissan Ester sold in the US?

Cheers!

I just did my 1st oil change yesterday at 5000km and put in catrol edge full synthetic. Engine is running alot smoother now. That Nissan oil is expensive at $68. The castrol was $48 and Ive used it before in my xr6 turbo

A lot of us had our 1st oil change at around the 1000 km mark. I think most of us just used what the service department recommended Nissan Synthetic.

Got mine changed to Mobil 1 after 2000km, and insisted on it again on my 6month service. Most pol I know choose which oil to stick to by trial and error. But we do have some good engine oils in Australia to suit our conditions.

When I contacted the local dealers about what oil they use, apparently it differs and it is what is purchased by them. The one I went to for my 10,000kms service uses Valvoline, but I purchased some of the Redline to try.

a close mate of mine use to work at STI docklands as a mechanic, he advised me that most factory oils are just re-labelled castrol products

The US Nissan ester oil is dino, not synthetic, mates! :tiphat:

Now get back out there and whack some cane toads, rofl...............

Well I spoke to a couple of dealers and they are adamant that the car comes to OZ with full synthetic from the factory. They also both said that the car doesn't really require a running in period and to drive it as normal after 500kms just so that your familiar with it and the tyres, brakes etc are all set in...

They recommended the Nissan synthetic that they sell (or course!) and one also recommends Mobil 1 - they both say that the car HAS to have full synthetic 5W 30 and that I shouldn't bother changing the factory oil until at least 5000 as its a waste of money.

I might still change it anyway since I brought the oil - plus it will be good get the tools out and my hands dirty for a change! :)

Regardless of grade or type do the run in oil change as stated in manual,But some owners think that the more often they change oil the better this is an old wives tale. keeping oil ultra clean glazes the bores and you will start ring blow by and oil burning much much sooner. Never was a fan of synthetic give me a good sooty carbon oil base anyday.

There is no oil change after run in period started in the manual. The dealers will leave the original oil in for 10,000km or 6 months and all that is done in the 1,000km service is a few checks. You have to insist on oil change seperatly or do your own if you want but they all say this is unnecessary since the factory oil is full synthetic...

I will be lucky to do 10,000 per year so will be getting fresh oil every 5,000 whether I like it or not - and since this will be done at the dealer, it will be fully synthetic - we don't get a choice.

i'm changing the oil at the 6 month mark to fully synth but don't know which one to go for...

there's no hard data out there... ><

Also, the nissan manager at my dealer said in no unclear terms the factory oil isn't fully synth but that ester stuff that's semi-synth...
