Base Stereo Cheap Upgade

I had Best Buy install two front door speakers and cannot believe the difference!
Product: Infiniti Reference 6.5” (REF60221) $180 including installation. Once my install kit arrives, I will have an Alpine deck and amp installed. More to come.

are those coax speakers? what did you do with the tweeter on the dash? just unplugged it?

I'd like to know about this too...as these are 2-way speakers. I was planning on putting a set of Infinity Kappa 62.9i in mine, but wasn't sure about the tweeter issue.

I would not let bestbuy TOUCH my car

I agree with this as well, also I would not install coaxial speakers when for the same price gotten a really nice set of polk mm series component speakers and not have the stock tweeter still there. When you do not have a tweeter up towards your ears you are off axis and the vocals are not where they are suppose to be. Even if you kept the stock ones connected it would not even sound right.

As for the name thing LOL haha :bowrofl:

I'm not a fan of aftermarket audio. I simply don't like the look of a non-factory deck and/or amps/subwoofers in the back, and on top of that...I'm not much of an audiophile. That said, simply replacing the speakers like you have done would likely be the route I'd go if I ever get around to it.

bigaudiofanat, would you say that just replacing the 4 speakers and nothing else in a Base would be a worthwhile upgrade, or is it one of those things where if you're not going to do it right, don't do it all? I would also do this only if I didn't have to cut trim for provisions for larger speakers or alter the look of the interior in any way...just plug-n-play replacements.

From my limited knowledge of car-audio, I understand that it's often the factory head-unit (and their built-in amps) which leave the biggest room for improvement, so would replacement speakers powered by a factory deck make a noticeable difference?

bigaudiofanat 09-29-2009 06:43 AM

Okay well replacing just the from COMPONENT speakers "a lot of people are calling it 4 speakers" That would work fine you are not going to get the best you can out of them as the factory amp in the head unit is not that strong. Yes even if you upgraded your deck and not the speakers you would hear a big improvement. Factory systems are not meant for any quality just to be there and have music. Also you will have to cut out the tweeter in itself not cutting anything to the dash just take it out and cut the speakers woofer right out of its metal casing than put your new one in pretty simple.

Rhinetom 09-29-2009 07:57 AM

The speakers are two-way and the stock tweeters were untouched. The sound difference (to me) is like night and day.

billydsz 09-29-2009 11:37 AM

I am very interested in swapping out the speakers only. I realize that the Bose/Nav system is subpar compared to top line aftermarket decks, but I also don't want to lose the seamless integration with the car my current stock setup has.

So bigaudio, what specific speakers would you recommend for the 370z for a swap of ALL existing Nissan/bose speakers currently in the car?? Much appreciate your help.

Not even close to what off Axis is. Off Axis is when the driver is not angled directly at the driver. This is the most common way to install anyway. In fact the tweeter would sound better lower ( say teh kick or door panel) closer to the midrange. Usually a large format tweeter is used higher on teh dash when running a dedicated midbass or a 3 way front stage.:hello:

bigaudiofanat 09-29-2009 03:49 PM

Yes but your front stage is not aimed at your listening position nor is it close with the tweeter down in the door

huh? im not following what your saying. if its not aimed at you its off axis. Most drivers respond better off axis.

B1nks 09-29-2009 08:03 PM

Yeah I'm not following this at all, but I am interested so lets keep this post going. What's the best way to set stuff up !?

bigaudiofanat 09-29-2009 08:08 PM

The best way is to have a single woofer in the door like there is factory and a new tweeter were that is suppose to be in the factory location. Not settle for small 1/4 tweeters built into the woofer. Also this will give you better imaging.

kenchan 09-29-2009 09:39 PM

hey JoeD- i donno, my pioneer looks factory finish. :p

blackbird 10-16-2009 07:24 PM

bigaudiofanat: any suggestions for replacement head unit. No GPS or DVD, just replacement for basehead unit. BTW found the Alpine SPX-17REF for 179 shipped.

bigaudiofanat 10-16-2009 08:58 PM

Are you still looking for a double din unit or a single din? The reason I ask is because 99% of double dins at least have a dvd player built in.

blackbird 10-17-2009 02:39 PM

Single.

bigaudiofanat 10-17-2009 05:26 PM

Well I think you will absolutely love this head unit. It has probably everything you could want in a unit and than some. I have personally had one and they are by far just great.

CDA-9886 - Alpine CD receiver with MP3/WMA/AAC playback

kenchan 10-17-2009 09:17 PM

the alpine is great.

another single din choice is the JVC Arsenal with HD radio. i run that on my dd (FitSport) and it's great...very nice EQ and processors to get a nice tight sound just running the front speakers. if i was to do a single din on the Z i'd get that since the base only has front speakers.

blackbird 10-18-2009 05:46 PM

Great, Thanks.

How in the world can the driver not be angled directly at the driver? Isn't that like a single object occupying 2 different places in the time/space continuum? :rofl2: I know what you meant though but the first time I read it I found it entertaining. I've gotten quite a few kicks lately reading through threads that both you and Big have posted in - never a dull moment with you 2 around.

All kidding aside, it bothers me that they claim the base system has 4 speakers. I mean come on, when have components actually counted individually? A tweeter and a midrange working together is one speaker. If we count components, then my HT isn't a 7.1 its more like a 28.4.

Still, some good info in this thread - I'm leaning toward upgrading the headunit first - then coming back in with a nice amp and component speaker upgrade followed by a subwoofer.
