Sub + Amp Mod Help!

I'm thinking about getting JL W7 and I need your suggestion on choosing an amp. I was thinking about JL 500/1 or JL 1000/1. Or if you have any suggestions on any brands on subs and amps, please help me out here. Thanks.

Can you provide the specs for the sub?

bigaudiofanat 09-10-2009 08:23 AM

I think the JL 500 will work fine with that sub. What are you looking to get from your sub? Massive hitting bass or just something to fill the gap? Also there is always the question of what is your price range?

speedfreak28 09-10-2009 02:30 PM

if its an 8w7 or 10w7 go with the 500/1 if 12w7 or 13w7 go with 1000/1. May i ask what made you choose w7? they're great drivers but theres plenty of other comparable options for much less money.

funny you say that , i was just talking to bigaudiofanatic and telling him the PG amps are a way better value for the money.

Indeed lol

Thanks guys for your help. I love music but really don't have any knowledge about sound systems. I am not really crazy about JL. In the past, I have had Rockfordforsgate and had blown it twice. After that experience I bought JL w3 10" and never had single problem. I only know about JL so lol. I'm probably gonna get used sub and amp price range about $600-$800?. If you guys have any suggestions on any brand combination, that would help me alot!. Thank You Very Much!

The reason that your sub blew was probably because it was not setup properly for when you set gains and suck. RF is a good company so is kicker and JL. That is a good price range to start you off.

did you set your gains by ear? :koolaidwall:

speedoflife 09-10-2009 08:26 PM

Eh. JL is great, just so expensive. Try www.ficaraudio.com for subs.
Quite an excellent company with the CS to back it up.
As far as amps go, Kicker is good, as is Rockford Fosgate. Or Sundown Audio.
LOL at the setting gains by ear. Let somebody who knows how set your gains. Unless you have access to an oscilloscope, that is.

no need for an O-scope, a DMM works just as well for level matching

I agree! JL subs hit soo good on a JL amp! High Damping factor is the reason for this and JL amps have the highest DF I have ever seen measured on a car audio amp.

Ehhhh, yeah you don't HAVE to have it... One is in the realm of some unknown impedance and measuring voltage does not show you where clipping will begin with a DMM. Any professional installer should use and o-scope. It can be done with a DMM or DVM, but an o-scope is preferable.

bigaudiofanat 09-11-2009 10:28 AM

You can do it any way. Please lets not destroy another thread by bickering about this. Every installer is different some use ears, some use DMM, some use 0-scopes.
