JL 13TW5 custom suybwoofer enclosure

This is some initial construction photos of my subwoofer enclosure. Its a downfiring, boundary loaded chambered sealed enclosure. Its also angled slightly to increase bass energy. It will have a plexiglass window installed so you can see the back of the 13W5 driver. My installer is a little crazy but I like how he thinks though!

From what I have been told the JL Audio 13TW5's work best when they are boundary loaded. The enclosure net volume will be exactly .8 cu ft as JL recommends.

My car is also getting completely covered in Rammatt sound deading. There will be a final layer of acoustic foam glued to every surface that has sound deadning material to further reduce road noise.

Stay tuned! More Photos to come.

Looks very promising. I am staying tuned

Looks great. I bet the people that ripped out there entire interior just to shed 300 pounds are cringing at these photos knowing that you just added a hundred, lol.

Yikes! I cringe at the thought of ripping out the interior of the car just to shed 300 pounds!!

Its a small price to pay considering I will have a much quiter vehicle inside and a killer stereo system. 100 extra pounds is negligible since I already added 50Hp with Stillen bolt-on mods.

Its done and it sounds amazing. I have never heard a single sub hit this loud and tight and I have done over 20 car audio systems.

Here are some photos. I will take some better ones once I get my new SLR camera.

These are also posted in another thread regarding "Subwoofer locations without losing the spare tire"

I feel this is the very best location to put a sub in the 370z. It not only sounds best here, but its stealth. Having subwoofers in plain sight puts you at a high risk to get ripped off by some jacka$$ thief. I have had it happen before and the damage cost 3 times more than the equipment they stole.

bigaudiofanat 08-29-2009 10:51 PM

Looks pretty good man to big for me. It is down firing so you are not hearing the bass you might be feeling it more than hearing it. Also don't you love the spare tire?

2fast4thelaw 08-29-2009 10:59 PM

You get a lot of tactile feel from the sub which is why it kicks so hard. Its also nice that you don't hear woofer noise either. I have killer midbass up front from my focals so it sounds like the bass is coming from the front speakers. It sounds wicked tight. you can feel it hit you in the chest.

This car is not my daily driver, its my recreational vehicle. I have AAA so if I get a flat I will call them and they will take care of it and I dont have to do jack. Plus I have had only one flat tire in my whole life.

very nice! If I didn't mind losing my spare tire, I would attempt a similar install.

bigaudiofanat 08-29-2009 11:06 PM

Ya I knwo what you mean about the focals they hit pretty hard.

Now that it looks like you're done - how much difference did the RAMMAT/foam make?

Do you have a measurements on your box? It looks pretty much exactly what I was looking for, I'd rather not re-invent the wheel, given your wheel looks quite round :)

HUGE! Sound deadning in this car makes a big difference. It cuts at least half of the road noise. I have a Stillen Exaust and HFC's and droned really bad before I put in sound deading. It was almost so bad I pulled the HFC's. After the Rammat was installed I cant hear any drone at all. It sounds like stock inside. Even driving at 80mph road noise is nominal. The foam is just a another barrier that makes it even more effective. Its pretty cheap so it doesent make sense not to use it.

I use Rammamt. you can buy it and the close cell foam here and its all very reasonable" http://www.raamaudio.com/

Dont bother with Dynamat, its way too expensive and no more effective than Rammat, plus Rammat is easier to apply.

Its definitly worth doing even if you dont put in a sound system.

I am sorry but I was asked to not give out the measurements. All I can tell you is its exactly .8 cu ft. I will give you more detailed photos and I am sure you can replicate it.

Very Clean, and hidden. Nice job. Best enclosure I have seen so far.
