Media / Navigation Idea
At first I was thinking to do something fun in my car with the RaspberyPi like this guy: Thoughts on in car computer?
Then I found this: Android Mini PC Which I could hook up to this: SAMSUNG Resistive Touchscreen or this: With Bezel This touchscreen would also complement a back-up camera since it has the trigger to automatically switch to the back-up camera video feed. If you want, you can also add a powered hub and attach things like GPS or a hard drive for your full media library. I plan on doing this in the future but do not quite have the funds to do so. Just some random thoughts and ideas I thought might be useful to someone looking to replace that dreaded compartment in the middle. |
as long as it can multi-task, i think its good.
like be able to listen to stereo/mp3 while nav is running or some other feature is running. |
I'm fairly certain it can since it runs on Android... it'll almost be like having a tablet but in separate parts. Can someone verify this on their Android tablet?

To address your other concern, I have an Asus TF101 tablet currently and you CAN play music at the same time as using GPS/browsing the web. It will run Google Play Music (local storage), Pandora or Grooveshark. When the GPS is running the tablet will automatically decrease the volume of the music when it is speaking directions. |
I agree... Tablet. I have a resistive touch screen in dash android double din with removable tablet/screen. It's ok and it def does everything from playing music to nav to tv to iPod controls.... The screen is a little touchy but other than that I think it's a good 400$ investment on my part considering I bought it a year ago. A 7" android tab or a iPad mini would be my vote... Plus you can also get a obd connector and monitor engine and car stuff in real time as well.

I too have thought about going the tablet route. One of the main problems I have with that though is hooking up a backup camera. Is there such a tablet with video input? If that is possible, is there some way or some app someone has developed that automatically switches to the backup camera when the car is put into reverse? If there is some solution, show me the way.
As for the resistive touch screen, my line of thinking was that I wanted something stable. When you're in a car, things can get bumpy and if you have something as sensitive as a capacitive touch screen, you are more likely to accidentally open a wrong app or choose a wrong setting. I thought this was the reason why most cars still use resistive over capacitive even if it is "old" technology (unless we are talking about the Model S). |
