JL Audio Amp install suggestions?
 

So i was wondering if anyone has installed any JL audio amps up side down before? I've done some google searches and heard that you can but i wanted to see if anyone has had any experience. I would like to mount them upside down and behind the seats which allows for better tuning. I know the JL amps are giant heat sinks and since they will be upside down it takes away from that function. thanks for your help or educated guess's. :tiphat:

Over many years I have mounted amps in all sorts of crazy configurations, None of which resulted in a overheating issue. My last vehicle had an MB Quart 1000watt mono amp mounted upside down on the rear parcel shelf. It got used hard, and never had issues with it. As a matter of fact, after 7 years of use, It has now retired to my amp shelf in the garage, but still works well.
If you are still concerned, you could remove the bottom of chassis, and drill a few holes in it to vent the heat, and mount it with small spacers under the feet so air can move about.
I'm sure you'll be fine, whatever you chose to do.

Thanks for the info, Ron. dunno if i want to drill holes in the amps though. from what i understand JL amps dont run too hot but i will be running one in parallel, since i want to run the speakers to their full potential, and im not sure if it will heat it up enough. I really like the idea of running the amps behind the seats.

I misunderstood... I was thinking upside down (as if hanging from cieling, for example) I should have re-read your post. You are mounting vertically. You should have no issues at all. Most amps are suitable for vertical mount....Turn it any way you like it, it should be fine.

I agree except for being able to mount it upside down. Most amp manuals even specifically say do not mount upside down. Nor would I recommend doing so.

well my thinking here is not taking apart the brain boxes in the back (they seem like it wouldnt affect the car but...) I like the idea of putting them behind the seats but they have all the dials on the bottom which makes it a pain the the butt to tweak when i i cant reach them without taking the amp off and apart...

It wouldn't effect the car but it would for sure effect your warranty for the amp.

Yeah when I saw that that's what made me think of mounting it behind the seats instead of the trunk.

They also caution you about sound pressures above 120, noone listens anyway.
See my above post where I had an mbquart mono amp mounted upside down for 7 years, and never had an issue. (even though the manual said not to mount it that way) That pic can be seen on my profile page in the album labeled "Sebring Stereo"
I also tear the tags off every mattress I buy....lol
Simple solution is this...Mount it how you like..if you have an overheat issue, reposition it.
