Amp and Sub question

i have a 5000 watt amp and wiring and all would a 10' work with that? I got the amp and wires for free and just got a custom box to fit a 10'.

bigaudiofanat 03-12-2013 02:51 PM

What is the amp? What sub?

w0rM 03-12-2013 03:47 PM

Wow... 5000 watts and a 10 foot sub? Nice!

:inoutroflpuke:

For a 5000 watt amp it sounds like you would need a 10 foot sub. Sounds like a bit much to power a 10".

Dont look at the max power, look for RMS on both the amp and speaker. Try to match those numbers.

Tyler_370z 03-13-2013 04:35 PM

well it was a free amp and wires and I have kicker speakers so was kinda thinking kickers but I know I can do better but the speakers are Kickers so would that mess with the sound at all?

VDC_OFF 03-13-2013 04:45 PM

do some research on the amp model to find out the RMS power.

Tyler_370z 03-13-2013 05:23 PM

what does RMS stand for? sorry this is my first time getting into systems and all I have always been a performance guy all the way but now Im doing it all with my Z :) gotta spoil my baby

RICAN 03-13-2013 05:37 PM

I just installed a 15" kicker l5 on my 370z I had a 12" kicker l7 and a 1500 Rockford fosgate class D and my l7 lasted 30 min ...so I installed the 15 and lower the gain on the amp...so a 5000 watt amp will blow anything you can fit on the back of a 370z!!...correct me if I'm wrong here guys !!!

Root Mean Square

xxAGAVExx 03-13-2013 07:26 PM

Manufacturers take a lot of liberties when they advertise thier Max Power of thier subs/amps, but the RMS is what matters. I have 500w RMS going to an 8" sub and it sounds great and I don't even crank the gain up. You start getting over 1000w RMS just for a sub, Its a little overkill, you'll start rattling your beautiful Z apart.

Tyler_370z 03-14-2013 09:36 AM

I got the amp for free. Its kinda new and my buddy had a 15 in his old T Bird and gave my everything but I have a custom box to fit a 10 :( so what you all are saying is that it will work but will blow my 10 :(? what if I have a bass control switch and keep it way lower? idk how much this amp is worth but im sure I can get some black getto guy with a cadi to buy it on craiglist but I would like to keep it if possible!

If that truly is a 5kW amp, there aren't many car speakers that will handle it, not to mention the damage to your ears and car. Of course, you don't have to turn it all the way up - limit the input to the amp so it doesn't put out more than a few 100s of W.

BTW, a 5kW amp will pull more than 350A under full load at 14V. Will your wiring, alternator, and battery handle that?

Tyler again we need to know WHAT amp and WHAT sub you have. What are the models. You will not blow it if tuned properly.

Tyler_370z 03-14-2013 10:43 AM

one sec I will take a look at the brand. but what your saying is, is that it would be smart to defiantly have a pro install and tune it?

I dont know what any of that means hahaha but sounds like a badass amp that needs to be in a strip club or something haha so I should go buy an amp and sub and wiring instead of using this amp?

Seriously bro, the amp in my car right now is like 250-300 RMS and it sounded great. This is wayyyyy over kill. I just sold my speakers so if you want my amp Im selling it for $100.

What that means is you have more than enough power for any sub out there on the market. the numbers below are if you were to run 2 subs together in series as long as the subs are between 1 (not common at all) and 4 Ohms. Without trying to confuse you too much... if you put two 4 Ohm subs in parallel the amp cuts the Ohm level in half for both subs to 2 Ohms etc. which means MORE power. Think of rock concert type volume in your tiny car...

I would suggest using a JL sub or another sub that can handle half the power of this amp and turn the gain up to only 1/4. 250 watts RMS is MORE than enough for this tiny car.

Max Power @ 1 Ohm: 5000 Watts x 1
Max Power @ 2 Ohms: 3500 Watts x 1
Max Power @ 2 Ohms, when strapped with same model amplifier: 10000 Watts

bigaudiofanat 03-14-2013 04:52 PM

Boss amps are not exactly quality. Never the less with that much power you need to make sure you run your sub at the proper level. Depending on what your sub is, it may be able to take the power your amp will put out. You have a gain knob on your amp that you will need to adjust when you install your amp and sub.

If the numbers and details above are confusing to you read up in this thread.

If you want to use that amp just for bragging rights about who has the most watts, then it is amazing.

But it's not very practical and it's not exactly hi-fi (but probably good enough for the ears of 90% of ppl and cars are a terrible sonic environment, so hi-fi is not that big of a deal). You're using a sledge hammer to drive a finishing nail.
The power wires are supposed to 0AWG wire. That's some big wire that is going to be difficult to run and to hide.
The amp will probably get quite hot, even when quiescent.
&C, &c, &c.

IMNSHO, your best bet would be to obtain an amp rated for approximately the same watts as your (sub)woofer can handle.

Tyler_370z 03-15-2013 10:44 AM

no I am.... I am going to prolly but it up for sale and prolly get a 1000watt for a 10 prolly

+1

You should always try to get an amp that will either match the RMS numbers of your speakers or have slightly more power. i.e. Sub is 500 watts RMS and the amp is 550. This gives you piece of mind knowing that there is little chance of popping your speaker and you can tune it within your tastes.
