Gt Mat Review

Review

So I received my trial piece a few months back. I decided to try it out this past week on a customers car. Pulling it out of the box the first thing I noticed is the mat is very light compared to others I have used with the equal size. So I got to work installing half inside of the product on one of the kick panel areas. Very similar stickiness to other products I have used in the past. I than installed Dynamat Xtreme on the other area. I than tested how dense the area by knocking on them. The Xtreme seems to be more dense than the GT Mat in absorbing sound. The GT mat did provide a better barrier than having nothing against sound. I than checked the thickness of GT Mat to Xtreme. The Xtreme was once again much thicker than the GT Mat.

Conclusion GT mat IMO is a good buy for someone looking to remove some road noise without adding a ton of weight to their car like the others offer. As a user of multiple name brand dampening products over the years i have not once had an issue with any of them melting off the panel. I am in no way saying GT mat is a bad product! I will say if your looking to kill a lot of road noise this will do the job but because it's density is much less than others, it is not as effective.

Will I use their product again? Absolutely, I am always looking for products to recommend to my customers. In the case that someone wants their panels to be more solid without adding a lot of weight, this is probably what I will use.

Did you try the 50 or 80 mil?

Whichever one they sent in the free sample. I will check when I get home.

That'd be 50 mil, not an equal comparison because dynamat Xtreme is 80 mil

I've used both Dynamat and GTMat, and for my car I did a single layer in the hatch and double where on the wheel wells and such, and it performed VERY well

I got about 72 sq feet of 80 mil going in mine, I hope it works well :)

Trunk (all of it), Floor, doors, and probably the rear hatch. I might do the firewall as well, we'll see how it looks once I get the dash out.

Thanks much for the review! I've been waiting to hear from folks. I will get the 80 mil then.

Hey Matt, thanks for the review! The sample size was 50mil which is our thinnest mat. I would be happy to send you some 80mil and even a sample of our new butyl based mat which is rated at 70mil. I'd love to have your reviews for each. Also, not sure if you received any of our liquid samples. PM me and we can discuss an entire kit being sent for review.

True but all the other companies have different thicknesses. I would have to see how the 80 performs, however I know that I could than compare it to second skin which is much thicker than either. There is always something better for a price.

put 50ft covering every nook and cranny from the seats back, even put jute anywhere i could squeeze it!not really any difference and now my car smells so bad i get a headache like im behind a tar truck. not a bit happy with this product or the 6 hours i spent installing it, not to mention how im gonna pull it up if the smell doesnt go away

I have the 80 mil. Its a noticeable step up from the 50 mil. GTMat is the way to go if you are on a budget but still want a quality item!

Good Review Matt!

Sorry, I replied after just reading the OP. This wasn't in regards to your reply so don't take it that way.

I know what smell you are talking about, but for some reason or another, I was lucky enough that when I did my install, there was NO smell afterwards and to this day there is no smell.

Even though it smells, it will go away after a few days.

bigaudiofanat 02-08-2013 08:56 AM

Because I only use a small amount of product, I did not notice a smell. I know a lot of (budget) mats usually have a smell. For big jobs I use second skin if I have a choice, no smell.
