Amp Mount - Behind Passenger Seat?

I was thinking about mounting my amp behind the passenger seat - towards the ground (not in the tray). I was wondering if its ok to drill the mounting screws here or is there something that i am risking puncturing on the other side?

The amp is too big to be mounted in the trunk between the cross bar and spare tire.

I'm not too concerned about loosing a few inches in leg room on the passenger side.

Thanks,

I think I am just going to use velcro - i found some thats sticky on both sides - so going to tape it to the carpet then tape some to the amp and vecro them together... it looks like a strong hold and the amp will kind of be pinched in place as well by the seat.... rarely do ppl move that seat anyways.... not like you have to scoot up to make room for ppl in the back.

The FSMs (available in the Tech section) will tell you if there is anything in the way. The fuel tank is in that general vicinity, but I don't know how close it is. The hook-and-loop tape is a good solution, since it obviates the need to poke holes in anything.

Nothing wrong with mounting the amp behind the seat, just make sure you provide adequate ventilation for cooling.

Carefull, I know there are gas tanks around there. I just put mine under the seat, its very snug. Lots more room with aftermarket seats like Brides.

good practice to not mount amps directly to metal chassis to begin with.
The only issue I see with the velcro is when the amp gets hot, will it stick, or will the adhesive melt off?? Time will tell, I guess.

I haven't heard that one before, but I haven't mounted an amp since 50W was considered high-power for a car (I've wired a lot of systems, but leave the physical installation to others). What's the problem? Vibration? Ground loop? Something else?

Exactly right, ground loop issue. Nowadays probably not so much of an issue with isolated grounding in newer electronics, but back in the day when I learned to install, it was a big no-no. Just something that stuck with me to this day. better safe than sorry, I say.

Thanks. Sounds like, if nothing else, isolating the amp would give you one less thing to worry about when troubleshooting.
I don't remember running into any ground loop problems back in The Good Ol' Days, but we weren't likely to bolt the amps down. Most common setup was just shoved under one of the seats. If you wanted to show it off, you'd screw it down to the fiberboard on the back shelf. :)

Ofttimes 'tis better to know what not to do than what to do. ;)

so true.

thanks guys - so i'm going to go w/ the velcro. I was thinking about mounting it in strips and not covering the entire back so there is still some ventilation.
