Dynamat Xtreme vs Superlite
 

Howdy all,

I'm currently in the process of dynamatting (and sooner installing) for my new sound system in my Z. I've already dynamatted the trunk (used approx. 8.5/12 sheets in bulk pack) using Dynamat Superlite and next plan to do the doors.

Questions -
1) Has anyone else used Superlite? How did you find it with road noise and how does it compare with Dynamat Xtreme?

I know the common argument of heavier dynamat = more mass = less vibration however I'm interested in people's actual experiences with both products.

2) Is it worth doubling up and using 2 layers of Superlite (or 1 layer Superlite / 1 layer Xtreme) on the doors and trunk?

3) How many sheets of Dynamat do I need to cover the inside and outside skins of both Z doors?

You will need 4 sheets to do inside and outside of door skins. I used xtreme and I'm happy with it. I have not tried the other stuff. I have done trunk and hatch, inside.kick panels and door skins. It's addicting....

Have you got any pics of your doors dynamatted? I've heard you can get away with 1 sheet per door per skin (so 2 sheets total per door) if you cut carefully?

I don't have any posted but others have posted pics of the doors dynamatted. The doors are bigger than you think and I don't think you can do inside and outside of the door skins without 4 sheets. But I only did the outside of the skins and I used two sheets with some leftovers. So maybe you can do it in three sheets if your very careful with your cuts.

Do your front interior kick panels too. It removes lots if road noise from the front tires in the cabin.

So lets say 4 sheets for the doors and 1-2 sheets for the kick panels?

You should have enough left over to do the kick panels if you get 4 sheets for the doors.

Have either of you considered doing the roof?

Given that my main focus is improving my sound system / reducing road noise, I've never really considered doing the roof. Besides, seems like a lot of effort...

I have considered it. I would use dynaplate in the floors before I would do the roof. Road noise comes up from the floor. I'm happy with what I have done but I might use my leftover pieces for the tranny tunnel in and around the shifter. That's bare metal under the shifter boot.

I agree. However, when I was talking with a local shop about sound deadening, they recommended it. I was kinda surprised .. considering I don't think I've seen anyone on the forums talk about doing the roof.. It is always just hatch/doors. I'm still unsure about the benefit of doing the roof...

I'm happy with Dynamat X-treme in my cars. I did the entire hatch area and the doors on my Z. The difference is significant, I think you'll like it. I got the bulk pack on amazon, with free shipping to Prime members.

I did the roof on one car, and I'm planning to install it on another car roof, but not my Z. I don't hear any noise coming from the roof of the Z.

When you guys refer to doing the "entire hatch", you mean just this right...?

From the pics, you will need to sound deaden the front of rear wheel wells. A lot of the unwanted noise comes from the rear wheel wells in front of the rear shock towers.

If installing dynamat or similar material,the plastic side panels have to be removed to install the sound deadening material. See the service manual for installation available to download from this web site. The removal of this side panels is involved but worth it to reduce unwanted noise in my experience.

Tip: I did not purchase replacement clips, that cause the plastic panels to create an unwanted noise.
I had to replace the side panels for a second time to eliminate the noise coming from the plastic panels.

Another option, is apply sound deadening to the outside of the rear wheel wells. The tires have to be removed and the factory undercoating must be degreased. Check out Second Skin material for this (sludged) material.

Another brand is LizardSkin but is made to be sprayed on the inside. If you spray it on the outside of the inner rear wheel wells, you have to paint over the LizardSkin.

I tried spray on bed liner to the inside rear wheel wells but did not reduce unwanted noise.
