Best bang for the buck setup?

I'm looking to upgrade the base speakers.

My standards aren't incredibly high but the speakers have to sound good and the base should be able to shake the car when I want it to.

Main requirement is a large touch screen, no or minimal lag, reads mp3 off a CD/DVD, navigation and rear view camera. I use an android so if there is some type of compatibility, great, if not, no biggie.

I'm not looking to spend too much on this, less than $1000, preferably closer to $500.

Any advice?

How much should I expect to pay for installation?

You are going to have a hard time shaking the car with just the 6.5 inch door speakers. For that, you will need a sub of some sort.

I would recommend Polk db6501 or mm6501 door speakers, amplified by somewhere around 100watts RMS. That will get you nice clean sound with decent mid-bass.

I installed my system myself, and saved a bunch of money. It isn't hard if you follow the instructions on this forum, and take your time to do a good job.

AppRadio 2 came out a recently. That has Android compatibility. I was looking into getting the AppRadio 1 but i heard alot of those units breaking. Maybe AppRadio 2 is better.

Also I have JL C3's installed which sound great. I had them running before i installed my sub and they sounded like like I already had a sub. just make sure you provide enough power to them with an amp.

Not really, a set of hertz or focal polyglass will really hit hard without a sub. However I recommend running something like that off an amp. So you are looking at paying more money. However I love the polyglass.

For a 500 or 1k bill your not going to be able to get solid bass from lower end speakers like the db's. I would recommend upgrading the head unit first than later upgrade the speakers.

I got a used avic-u310bt for $185 eBay, db6501s $110, rear view cam $30, accessories $65 and labor is $170. That's $560 I feel like I got a lot for the money (haven't had it installed yet). If I had a little more I'd go for a four channel amp and maybe mm6501's. I feel like you'll spend upwards of 1k for system w/ a nice large touchscreen.

Bigaudiofanat - Should I get an amp or will the 50 watts rms the headunit provide be enough? What will I notice with 100 watts rms running to em? Mostly hip-hop - 328kbs mp3's.

honestly ive been pretty happy with just my double din pioneer and rearview camera.

the 3 band parametric EQ and DSP on these pioneers are so adjustable it can make your stock junk speakers sound pretty good.

If you don't absolutely need a touchscreen, and want something stock looking you could try the JVC KW-R900BT. I have one installed, and it sounds great. It has most of the bells and whistles of the higher end, non navigation units. Bluetooth, ipod controls, high end sound processing, time alignment.... Would save you a bunch of money to use on speakers, and sound just as good as a touchscreen unit.

For bass, I used a $200 infinity bass link and it shakes the car quite well for what it is.

Im quite happy with it.

You can not wire up bose speakers in place of base speakers because of the ohms difference, you would fry your base head unit. The bose speakers are just as paper as the base speakers. A set of polk db's would sound better than them as well.

I got the touring for the interior so the bose came with the car. I figured for him he could get the speakers and bose head unit for cheap. Since a bunch of guys have swapped them out for a much better setup.

On the cheap? Buy an infinity kappa tweeter/door speaker combo. As for the head unit, I have a Pioneer AVIC-Z140BH and I love it. I think they're down to around $700 but you can get the XBT for a lot cheaper (sans DVD playback) but both come with nav. If you want XM there's a (cheap) separate module.

If you want to keep going, I installed an alpine 4 channel amp under the passenger seat and ran lines to a small pioneer sub in the back just to fill out the sound. Entire setup cost me less than $1500 but a friend and I installed it.

If you have it done at a shop and you don't buy the parts from them, expect 400-600 in install costs depending on the complexity of the setup.

Edit: If you need links to prices, i can pull up my old amazon shopping cart but it shouldn't be hard.

*unfortunately the reliable infinity 6x9s won't fit in the Z which blows but the kappas are a good substitute (and cheaper)

2nd edit: Also confirming that the stock bose system is junk and is *NOT* what you'd get were you to buy a bose system out of a store.

Sadly if you disassemble even the home bose speakers they sell today you will see a lot of cheap woofers and manufacturing. If you were talking about the ones 12 year ago, now there were built pretty well.

dmhenderson 07-16-2012 09:17 PM

Yeah you're on the money. Talking about now - add to that the 370z bose system is a notorious bastard to work on/rip out and you are literally better off saving your money, getting the base system and just throwing it in the garbage then replacing it with something decent.

dmhenderson 07-16-2012 09:18 PM

Speaking of which, I gave two internet friends base 370z head units for white elephant christmas gifts last year http://i.imgur.com/UwxLa.gif

I am using my Pioneer DoubleDin & Kenwood Component Speakers.

Sounds actually not that bad. Wish I had more bass, but I cant afford much. Was thinking about the Inifinity bass link, but i am coming from 2 12" Kicker l7s in my tahoe.. If i am gunna have bass, i might as well have something powerful.

While the basslink won't be near 2 good 12s, I find it more than good enough for a small car like the z.

I have one, but I have no idea how a video would be near the quality to show you anything.

I actually ordered a Pioneer AVIC-920BT cause it looks OEM to match the inside of the 370z. My friend had a 03' 350z that I installed this headunit in and it looked great. I didnt like the look of the new AVIC-930BT and 940BT. My brother has a Z130 in his truck and is getting the Z140 soon.

I will post some installation pictures after I get the 920BT in it. Mind you the headunit is about 3 years old, but you can buy Pioneer flashupdates for it that make it use the same firmware as a 930BT. I just like the look of the 920BT over the 930BT.

Here is what one looks like inside of the 370z:
http://www.the370z.com/members/jayyo...vic-x920bt.jpg

* On a little side note. The reason why we installed this in my friend's 350Z was because the BOSE amp died. So we swapped the headunits. I have to drill through the door harnesses to run new speaker wire to the doors. Pulled out the old bose speakers. Put JL 6.5 ZRs components in the fronts and JL CS's in the rears. He got the highest powered alpine amp at the time that was 5 channels.. dont really like alpine speakers/amps/subs. Ive already been a strict JL or Focal ( when I got the budget ) guy. But I do remember installing everything that day and remembering how much a pain it was to drill through those harnesses just right to get the speaker wire in.
