Sub Choice TS-SW841D or Two CVT65?
 

I'm trying to pick the best sub for a custom box inside the spare tire well (while keeping the spare). I think I'm between:

1. One Pioneer TS-SW841D (8 inch shallow mount)

OR

2. Two Kicker CVT65 (6.5 inch)

Any thoughts on either of the above? Any better suggestions?

I'm not looking for anything that shakes the mirrors loose. Just something to round out a pair of OZ Audio components I have up front.

The sub(s) will be powered with 1/2 of a JL 300/4 amp (sharing power with front components).

I was in the same boat, not necessarily the brands that you picked but the sizes. I ended buying 1 - 10" after some research and a few calls to verify what would be best to match up to the amp and speaker's I had bought.

Amp = Alpine 4.150
Speakers = Focal

Hope you don't mind, and I don't know if you're a name whore or not, but I took the liberty of finding you a few more options that are great subs and great prices. Any one of these should match up pretty good with the amp you already have. All of these are priced from sonicelectronix.com I have done a lot of business with them in the past and I have never been disappointed.

I don't care about brand name at all. However, are these shallow subs? Keep in mind I want to put this inside the spare tire (not the spare tire well). Thanks.

None are shallow mounts, but they should all fit. I made sure to look at the mounting depth on each, before I posted. None of them are over 4 1/8" mounting depth and they all need less than .65cu ft. of air space.

Any reason why you suggested those subs over the One Pioneer TS-SW841D? Are they better quality or just cheaper in cost? Thanks.

Well, BOTH actually. Pioneer makes great head units and great in home entertainment products but I have never taken too great of a liking to their other car audio products (ie subs) Not to mention, they are actually more expensive than the Pioneer would be at MSRP but sonicelectronix does whole sale and are authorized dealers of a lot of different companies.

I'm just not sure that those subs will fit. I went out and measured the height (spare tire to top of cavity). It was about 4 3/4 inches. Since the sub mounting depth is 4 inches, and the mdf is 3/4 (or 1/2), that doesn't leave much/any room. I still want the carpet to lay flat in the rear.

What about the JL 8w1v2?

That would be a great 8" sub, I have always loved JL, a little over rated sometimes but still a great company. However that sub is 3 and 13/16 mounting depth although the sealed volume of the box is a tad smaller so it may just work

You'd be sadly disappointed with 6.5" because they dont play any deeper than the stock speaker. The 8" will be better, but still not hit 30hz notes and it's not enough cone area to make a lot of bass. A single 10" will hit the deep notes, still play up to 150hz to meet your factory front speakers and have enough cone area to make real bass....

I just hope it fits into the spare tire without any problem....I'm kind of worried about that.

I think this will be much better than any 8" you were going to put in there. The sealed volume is .625 so you should be fine there. The only issue you may run in to is the fact that the mounting depth is 4 and 7/16" so it may sit up a little higher than you might hope. Worst case scenario, you end up with your carpet having a little bulge in it. I just hope that after this you don't plan on putting anything in the rear. You could always take a piece of 3/4" MDF and cut it to shape then place it over the sub, that way you could still pack stuff in the back without destroying your sub.

I would suggest a new JL Audio 10W0v2.

Those are pretty shallow and will kick out some killer bass. 6's and 8's just arent big enough to give you that visceral kick.
