Try crutchfield for starters to see what is & isn't compatible, or go to your local audio place too.

1 grand will go far

Even though I'm having some wiring issues, you can certainly do a lot with 1 grand. Don't have to spend much to get a nice head unit. Install the Polk MM 6501s, along with a decent amp and you'll be in " pig-heaven." Send me a PM if you want more info...

What are you looking for as far as features in your new head unit?

There are so many options that you could spend 200 bucks or 1300 bucks.

If you dont care about Navi....

JL HD500/3 (ebay 278.00 shipped)
Polk MMC650 (ebay 249.95 shipped)
Z 12" enclosure (ebay 169.99 shipped)
JL w3 12" (ebay 184.95)

Leaving 117ish for a headunit and wires. You could always buy used components, but its a starting point. I think the JL HD500/3 is perfect for a car like the Z. You could option for used components or a different subwoofer or components to make it fit the budget.
