Amp and speaker advice
Just got my base + sport Z a couple weeks ago and the stereo is killing me, so it is time to upgrade.
I am pretty well set on getting one of the non-touchscreen JVC double din units. Where I am having to make tougher choices is the speakers and amp. I am looking at the Polk Audio DB6501 Component System or maybe the MM versions. What amp should I get to push these? I am 6'3" tall, and one of my frequent passengers is too, so I need it to fit behind or below one of the seats, while the seat is all the way back and reclined. Is there enough room? If not, where will an amp fit? I was looking at a Pioneer GM-5500T or something similar. Amazon.com: Pioneer GM-5500T 2-Channel Bridgeable Amplifier: Car Electronics For bass, I was looking at the 250w powered Bazoooka 6.5 or maybe a basslink or something. Once again, not much room. I know the bazooka will fit in back, where the foam is, the basslink, I don't know. Any help would be awesome. thanks guys. |
The polk MM's would be a better choice, IMO. Also, the pioneer amp is kinda big, there are better choices in the fully digital realm, like the new alpines, and jl also has a mini-amp, as well as re audio, 1/2 the size, and good power, as well. Of course, there is a bigger price tag for a smaller footprint.
I can't comment on the basslink, but the bazooka's sound pretty good. I believe the basslink is overpriced, from some I have spoke to. In the end, its really up to you. |
X2 on both the better speakers and the alpine amps.
|
Which new alpine amps are you talking about? Smaller would be good. Are there any reasonably priced smaller amps out there?
Also, I have been hearing a lot about the Sound ordinance and kenwood 5x7 powered woofers. Any info on these? |
Smaller quality amps are always going to be more expensive than larger sized amps. The PDX series are still nice
|
Another amp to consider might be the PPI P900.4. I just put one in one of my other vehicles and I am happy with it so far. Very good power and reasonable price. I got mine from Sonic for about $200. Good luck!!
|
Hmm.. I only really need a 2 channel 100w RMS amp that will fit under or behind the seat. Is there anything like that anyone has used here?
My total budget is $800 at the most. That is for HU, amp, speakers and some sort of sub. |
I just bought a JL HD900x5 and speaker set up from Wicked C.A.S. The setup consisted of JL C3's for the doors and dash and their "stealth" box with a JL 13tw5, which fits on top of the spare tire and you loose no trunk space. They are a forum sponser and have a thread on here for that box/speaker setup. It was almost buy the box and get the woofer free. I recently had the system installed and I just tuned it last night. O...M...G! Remember this, sound quality starts with the radio. If you start with poop and put an amp on it... you get amplified POOP. BTW the amp fits under the seat.
http://www.the370z.com/audio-video/1...e-sub-box.html Just my :twocents: |
That would be a good idea, as it would take care of my space issue, but just the woofer and enclosure puts me above my budget.
|
they do a 10". the box is $399 and speaker is $100
|
I have a sport model, so I have to get the 13" sub and enclosure which comes out to $799. I would buy a 10" version in a minute if they offered one for the sport 370. 13" is a bit large for the sound I am going for anyhow.
|
Call Nazar and talk with him. He can put you in the right direction and clarify what the website doesn't. There is always a JL stealth box with two tens I think that fits with minimal space taken.
|
The JL Audio Nissan 370Z Stealth box contains two 10-inch, 10W3v3 sub-woofers in a sealed fiberglass enclosure. The sub-woofer system is mounted ahead of the rear axle. This way the producer says it will preserve the cargo space and maintain the vehicle’s weight distribution.

Isn't that going to put me waaaay over my $800 budget? I mean, I would love to drop $1500 -$2000 total for everything, but ... I would still need front speakers, a HU and an 2 amps after buying that.
Has anyone tried putting an Infinity Basslink or similar unit in the area above the spare tire? I'm trying to be a little creative, as money is a bit short, and space is very tight. |
ebay has that box for $799, so yes you will be looking at something over your budget. only think I can recomend is to ride out the system you have now until you can afford a better one. I know that you want it NOW, but don't settle for second best. You would hate to know what I paid for my system and only the system. Not even going to talk about the install.:wtf2:
And possible one amp if you can run the subs in parallel EDIT... Just read the instalation guide. At the end it recomends that you use a one channel amp. advising that, you are good with one amp that is 5 channels |
hey op, if it's just the dB6501's i would run it off the HU's amps. GL with the install!
|
How good do the dB6501's sound off of an aftermarket HU? I have installed this kind of setup before, and every ounce of bass has disappeared.
I know they aren't going to replace a sub, but will there still be enough bass for the db's to sound better than the stock speakers? |
Sound good, if you want great look at getting an amp and a set of speakers form focal or hertz
|
No way in the world is a BassLink going to fit in the tray area of the hatch. I think you're going to be limited to a 6.5" Bazooka or doing something custom with an 8" sub. A shallow 10" will fit in the spare if you are up for building an enclosure for it. There are a few threads on here that show how to do it. That is the route I am currently taking.

I would love to make a custom enclosure for a shallow sub to fit in the spare tire area. Don't really have the equipment or know-how to work with fiberglass etc...

I just installed these two amps under my seats tonight. The mono amp is slightly larger and had to go under the driver's seat. The space under the passenger seat is actually tighter and luckily I was able to to fit the smaller 4 channel amp under there. I am able to safely adjust the seats forward/backward without any snagging. They cannot be seen when the seats are installed. Using Amazon will help you save money. These amps are cheap and effective.

I'll have to look into those amps. Thanks for the info Telephone.

Here's a pic of the sub/sub box of my sound system.
Specifications: Focal K2P front tweeters/6.5" mids 8" Alpine sub Audison bitTen signal processor (active set-up) Hertz HDP-5 amp. I fabricated the sub box out of fiberglass to fit the space behind the strut bar (foam insert area). |
Yeah I just saw you posted that in your other thread. Are you selling these? A flush mounting version would be awesome.

Fiberglass Sub Box
Quote:
Not sure on the price, but it would cost more that typical MDF constructed sub boxes due to material cost and layup time. My one-off sub box took about a month to make due to being sick over the Christmas holidays. If other people are interested, I will have to made a mold which could reduce the time factor. The sub box enclosure volume size is dependent upon the sub woofer you plan to use. My sub box is 0.29 cu.ft. will polyfill added inside the sub box. The amp rack is located on the passenger side under the sub enclosure that covers the foam piece and is access through a port. The amp's access opening is large enough to permit access for adjusting the amp's gain controls. There is approximately 1.0 interior cu. ft. for the sub box if the entire space where the foam piece is located in used as a sub box. That said, the amp would have to be located elsewhere. For example, a JL Audio 8w7-3 sub requires 0.875 cu.ft. for a sealed sub enclosure or 1.00 cu.ft. for a ported enclosure. |
