Pioneer makes the BEST head units. My First touch screen unit was an older pioneer unit back in like 2005, was stolen and replaced with a Clarion double din, which is still good but not the same.

I plan on putting a real good head unit in the Z when I get it, I should start searching around for what kind of harnesses are required etc for install.

That looks like it is gonna be awesome. Maybe it's time to try and sell my avh-p4300dvd and pick one of these up!

It's based on the app radio which I have two. They are the biggest POS ever. Have not tried this unit, but if it's anything like the app radios you won't be able to do more than one thing at a time. If you are listening to music it will cut it off and won't turn it back on after the phone rings forcing one to fudge through the iPhone or smart phone to get it back. There saftety security which will ask you to put the car in park constantly then press OK most of the time for no fudging reason. The it will not let you run gps and listen to the radio or iPhone, pandora and switching between give one the saftety message every time. You have to constantly use the interface through the phone stop and start the app before it will come back up. You can't use the radio and have intrix running in fact if you want to use the radio at all nothing else can be used I can't even plug my phone in for charging and use the radio or it will keep switching automatically to another apps. After a while it will boot up in Win CE mode and or just blank screen. Each of Pinoneers apps run good on the smart phone but plug it into that pile of **** and apps will only partially function and mostly crash.

Best of all call Pinoneer about the issue and they don't give rats *** they tell you to send it in on your dime and they say it will be a month before you get a replacement. Done that twice and all you get is a refurb POS that won't work after the first 24 hours.

Yes I am having to send one back again I just pulled out of the box last week.

The concept is great pioneers production And saftety BS is the worst my advice stay way away from Pioneer products.

I am now using my Alpine iPhone enabled instead much better product.

^pioneer has made great quality head units for years. some of the best on the market. If the firmware is the issue then that's a different story. But hopefully they've seen or heard about these issues and have fixed it in this new head unit. My clarion is the same, the firmware sucks and there's bugs. No point in keeping sending it back, just wait for updated version of the firmware OR buy the next one they offer with updated firmware. A lot of brand name double dins experience similar issues with firmware in various functions. I wouldn't justify that as saying that it's a POS. That said I'd give this head unit a try for sure.

Get it try it let me know. I thought the same thing too once. I have upgraded the firmware which is really just reprogramming the Windows CE app they are running it on.

By all means try it let me know how it goes after a month. I know I did and complained and they told me to get bent.

To let you know how bad it is they sent me 4 surveys recently asking about problems with the appradio for each registered stereo I have or had. Sad. I told the I wanted a refund. They said take it back to the store. Yeah that is going to work after 15 days.

dunno bout where you're located but over here here, stores like Bestbuy and Futureshop have a minimum 30 days for returns, and like 90 days for exchange on another product.

That is your opinion maybe a few of the members can chime in with their experience especially the ones that have had their pioneers a few years and had problems. IMO kenwood or alpine make the best. Especially with the problems with pico fuses on the pioneers.

Please do a google search on pioneer and s*** plenty of threads about the fallowing:

pico fuse blown, screen flickers or fails, cd's stop ejecting, unit bricks, motorized units fail to move, and so on.

I gave up on the years ago and started a HUGE thread on caraudio.com over 10 pages later of most people venting about how bad their units were and are.

I have gotten pm's on this forum even about people asking why they didn't go with another brand in the first place. Are there the exceptions of course however my overall experience with them is a negative one and a very large number of them in all.

If I even had to single out one flaw in the pioneers I would simple say pico fuse and there are pages and pages of people saying it blows for no reason one day and BAM alternator wine. However this could be caused by their installer not grounding the unit properly or simply by them hot swapping rca's one day. But for the answer to be either ground your rca outputs onto your head units chassie or send it to pioneer to get it replaced. My thought is why should I have to do either on a 1k+ head unit in the first place.

bboytaktix 03-04-2012 09:40 AM

^bigaudiofanatic, you make a valid point. Didn't realize that so many pioneer units had issues. When I was much younger, I had two friends who were car audio installers and I had never seen any of these issues or heard about pioneer head units having problems. I also came to be a custom audio installer on my own projects/vehicles and never had issues with pioneer either, but then again I've not had a sample population of Pioneer users as you seem to have. Good to know. And nice avatar, I remember that diagram on a final exam from one of my first year engineering courses :D

anyone know the release date for the 8400??

UNKNOWN_370 03-11-2012 12:46 AM

Hmmm... well I know this much. Every company has a model or two that suck. Some companies issues get more internet play than others. So far, many of the consumer reviews from crutchfield, amazon, sonic electronix, etc seem to be positive on recent pioneer models.
I'm not discrediting or invalidating your thread and I'm sure there are issues with some pioneer units. But I know quite a few people that swear by pioneer.

Most usually go alpine, kenwood and JVC for a budget unit. But the mixtrax feature on the pioneer is definately worth taking the risk. No one else out there has anything like it... as far as App radio being a POS. App radio is over a year old and pioneer was the only brand to really make that breakthrough to that degree. Like cars, first model headunits usually have glitches... now there's app radio 2. Its been out for a few months and so far, so good. Now they are moving the app tech to other models... I'm in. :)

How is this Android compatible exactly? It says this unit is made for iPhone. If you're talking about basic bluetooth features and bluetooth streaming, that's not really anything different than what's out there. I do like that it has 4V pre-outs... that would work great with the Bose system in my Z.
